May 2018 saw a record high of 153,000 people move to Australia—a 3.5% increase compared to last year.

Economists point to the dramatic increase as a great economic boom, particularly for the country’s small business sector.

“Those (business) owners who are riding the wave are buying up a rental property, building subdivisions, and investing in their own business growth,” says Professor Kevin Downes of the Baker Institute. “For small business owners, any cyclical business or government economic growth is a welcome opportunity.”

These business owners are hoping for another unprecedented influx of migrants into Australia in the future, especially from South Asia and China.

The rising Australian economy is also in direct proportion to the decline in the labor force participation rate in Australia.

This means that Australia has been able to steadily draw in more migrants to supplement the labor pool as the labor force has grown.

The Australian government is hoping that these migrants will make the country even more competitive in the global marketplace.
