Eyesight is really a gift of God, and the value of eyesight is well known to a person who is blind. Thus it is often said that eyesight is as important as breathing. It is because of our eyesight that we are able to appreciate the beauty of this colorful world. Some common eyesight problems are as follows.

1. Myopia or short sightedness is caused due to the elongated shape of eye ball that causes light to be focused on the retina directly instead of its surface. People with myopia cannot see distant objects clearly. Headache is a symptom of myopia. Eye glasses, contact lenses and Lasik surgery can combat myopia.

2. Hyperopia or farsightedness is caused due to shorter eyeball that causes light to be focused behind the retina instead of the surface. People with hyperopia can see distant objects more clearly in contrast to nearer objects. Again eye glasses, contact lenses and Lasik surgery can treat hyperopia.

3. Astigmatism is another common eye problem. It is caused when the shape of the eye ball becomes oblong instead of spherical. This causes two light points instead of one to be focused on the retina. Blurry vision and headaches are symptoms of astigmatism. Toric lenses, eye glasses and refractive surgery can treat astigmatism.

4. Presbyopia afflicts most when they reach the age of 40. The focusing ability of eye weakens resulting in unclear vision. Reading glasses, bifocal lenses may be used to fight presbyopia.
