Pelvic floor exercises are an important part of overall health. These are easy to fit into your fitness regime and can boost your core strength.

Why everyone should do Pelvic Floor Exercises

Many people do not realise just how important the pelvic floor muscles are. These act as vital support and control muscles for our digestive and sexual organs. As we progress through life these muscle can grow weak. This is a particular problem with the sedentary life many modern westerners live.

Weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to a number of problems including:

  • Urinary Incontinence – this muscle group is responsible for the control of urine from the bladder to the urethra. If you do not strengthen and tone pelvic muscles then you will be more likely to suffer from urinary incontinence.
  • Prevent Prolapse – the pelvic floor muscles support our lower internal organs and hold them in place. If these muscles get weakened then it can increase the risk of a prolapse. This can be a particular problem for women who can suffer from vaginal and uterine prolapse later in life and following the rigours of child birth.
  • Child Birth – giving birth is a very stressful and exhausting process that requires high levels of stamina. Pelvic floor exercises can help you to strengthen your interior muscles in preparation for child birth. Pelvic floor exercises are highly recommended by doctors for women planning a pregnancy.
  • Sexual Gratification - pelvic floor exercises have also been linked to an increase in sexual gratification. This muscle group supports and controls the sexual organs and by toning them you can intensify sensations of pleasure. Many experts believe that pelvic floor exercises can also help to control erections and reduce problems such as premature ejaculation.

Even if you are quite fit you may not be targeted your pelvic floor muscles effectively to tone and strengthen them. This is why it is so important that you follow a regular regime of pelvic floor exercises.

Pelvic Floor Exercises

Pelvic floor exercises can be done at any time, in any place. This is because they are very discreet and involve you simply squeezing and releasing your pelvic floor muscles. It is important that you empty your bladder though before you start to get the best effects. You can feel the pelvic floor muscles when you hold back urine or bowel movements. This will help you to identify the muscle group correctly when you are doing your pelvic floor exercises.

Women can add resistance to pelvic floor exercises by using special toning objects which can be fitted into the vagina. This means you could feel the benefits from just a week or two of exercises. However there are no ways to add resistance for men though so it can take them as long as 4 weeks before they start to see any real benefits.
