Improve Yourself after Military Service
Written by Oliver Whitham
If you have served in the armed forces and are now living life as a veteran, you may have noticed that life in the civilian world feels, just a little bit odd.
The good news is that even though things might seem weird at first, the government’s GI Bill provides military veterans with a high level of support to help Veterans return to civilian life.
The great thing that many vets do not realize is that life in the military teaches you some amazing skills to help improve your chances of landing civilian jobs. It’s not just skills that you lean either. Military training gives you above average personality traits in terms of organization, discipline and stamina.
When you are in the military you can learn skills as wide ranging as engineering to logistics. Transferring these skills to civilian life is not always easy, however with your GI Bill benefits, you can re-purpose your military training through civilian higher education to help get the job you want in the civilian world.
By using higher education you can take specialist courses on subjects related to your military skills to really enhance your current knowledge with a civilian focused skill set.
You are not just limited to your current skills however. The GI Bill provides you with education funding no matter what course you take, so if you are looking for a change of pace, this could be the perfect opportunity to learn something completely new and speed your life towards a whole new destination.
Whether you want to re-purpose your training, or change your life completely though, the government does provide some sturdy support for Vets looking to improve their life after military.
The most common way to pursue this after leaving military service is through the GI Bill. There are two forms of this, the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Most recent veterans will be using the Post 9/11 bill, however older veterans remain under the Montgomery GI Bill. If you are still under the Montgomery GI Bill, don’t forget that you must verify your enrollment with the higher education body (online or offline) through the GI Bill WAVE system. This only takes a few seconds but you need to do it every month to receive your benefits.
Both forms of the GI Bill provide a generous amount of funding to help subsidize a veterans tuition, and in may cases housing and books too. The amount varies from state to state, but you will rarely exceed the amount of funding provided.
If the option is available to you, the post 9/11 GI bill will usually be the most suitable form of the GI Bill to help you through education. Be sure to check through the pros and cons of each version of the bill though, as certain forms of the Montgomery bill may give you a little more than the standard Post 9/11 bill depending on your circumstances.
For the most part though, the biggest decision you face will be choosing which course you will take. Whether you want a fresh start, or decide to capitalize on your military training, choosing the best course can be a hard choice. Make sure that you choose something that interests you, that you enjoy, and that can easily be transferred to the civilian world when you finally start to look for a civilian job.
