Trying to conceive isn't easy, in fact it can be something of a lottery but there are several tips for getting pregnant which can help to increase your chances of conception.

EAT HEALTHILY

Eating foods which provide the right minerals and vitamins is of huge importance as it can greatly increase your levels of fertility. Supplements such as folic acid should also be taken, folic acid can help to prevent problems during pregnancy as well.

GIVE UP SMOKING

Smoking is bad for several reasons. Research has proven that smoking lowers the womans fertility levels and the males sperm count. It has also been shown that women that smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have a premature birth which could lead to longer lasting health problems.

AVOID ALCOHOL

You should aim to really cut down on the levels of alcohol you drink or cut it out all together. In males alcohol effects the sperm count and in women it prevents the vital vitamins that you need for conception from working. During pregnancy it can also increase the risk of miscarriage.

EXERCISE REGULARLY

A gentle exercise routine can have many benefits and one of those is that it can increase the stimulation of some of the hormones vital in conception, it is also a great stress relief. Be careful not to overdo things however as too much exercise can actually lower your fertility rate.

RELAX AND ENJOY

Many couples put too much stress on themselves when trying for a baby which only lowers the chances of getting pregnant. Try to stay relaxed and stress free, don't become obsessed with the medical ins and outs, romance one another and simply enjoy yourselves because the moment you stop having fun your chances will fall.

TO ALL MALES - AVOID TIGHT CLOTHING

One common cause of a low sperm count is down to the testes being overheated. One way of avoiding this is to wear lose fitting underwear as this will keep them cool. Also try to avoid hot baths and showers to prevent them overheating.

KNOW YOUR CYCLE

Knowing your menstrual cycle will help you to get pregnant as you will then know when your body will approximately release the egg and thus when will be the best time to make love.

I know exactly how you feel as it happened to me. I was told by 3 different fertility specialists that I was in early menopause, had no eggs left and that my only chance of having a baby was to use a donor egg or adopt. Against the odds, I fell pregnant naturally with a healthy baby boy at the age of 40.

I recently heard from someone who told me that she had heard (and now assumed) that more summer pregnancies resulted in a girl baby so, now that fall was approaching, she had decided to call off trying to get pregnant and wait until next summer to try again. She was so intent on getting a girl baby that she did not want to risk trying to get pregnant in the fall because she was afraid that this would give her a higher chance of conceiving a boy.

Granted, there is a study which indicated that slightly more girls were conceived in warmer months than boys. But the number differences were not significant enough (at least in my opinion) to derail or delay her entire regimen for a year. I'll look at the study in more detail (and tell you my opinion on timing for a girl conception) in the following article.

The Study Which Implied That More Girls Babies Are Conceived During The Summer Months (But That Spring Was Actually Optimal:) There's a small Italian study which looked at gender rates at different times (and months) during the year over the course of six years. The study implied that the best month for conceiving boys was actually October and the best month for girl babies was actually April (which is technically in the Spring.)

But I take these figures with a grain of salt. The numbers were by no means staggering. For example, one figure showed that of the 1,000 babies born during that optimal October, 535 were boy babies while 465 were girls. That's still plenty of girls. And in the optimal girl month (April) there were 513 girls and 487 boys, which of course are plenty of boys among the girls.

The researchers did develop a theory as to why they saw this difference. They theorized that because male babies are weaker and more vulnerable in the womb and during the first few weeks of life, nature helps things along by ensuring that more boys are born when it is warm so that the weather is one less detriment that the weaker boys have to face.

But, if you buy this theory, you might also want to consider that girl babies are the strongest of the two. They can more easily survive in both cold and warm weather. So, nature has to make no such concessions for female babies.

Controlling What You Can When You Are Trying For A Girl Baby, Regardless Of The Season: Obviously, you can't control what goes in inside your body when you're trying to conceive. You can't go in and make sure that it's a X sperm chromosome that fertilizes your egg and produces a girl. But, you can control some of the variables that go into this.

You can conceive early (before ovulation) since this exploits the shorter life span of the Y or boy producing sperm. For the same reason, you can consume acidic foods and use specific douches to create a more hostile environment for them. And you can know that shallow penetration isn't great for those Y's either.

Yes, there does appear to be slightly more boys conceived in colder months and therefore born in warmer months. And there seems to be slightly more girls conceived in warmer months and therefore born in colder months. But the differences are not that great and so much would depend on where you live and your location's climate. In my opinion, you're better off controlling what you can and using the tools that allow you to at least estimate if what you are doing is working.

If you happen to be in a warm month or live in warm climate when you're seeing indications that you've reached your optimal girl conception day, then that's great. But in this situation, I didn't see any reason to wait another year to attempt to conceive based only on the weather.

I recently had someone ask me if the mother's stress levels would make her more likely to get pregnant with a boy or girl baby. This person had a very high stress job and was worried that this would keep her from getting pregnant with the girl that she desperately wanted. I'll explore this issue more in the following article.

It's Possible That Stress Can Affect Or Delay Ovulation: There's little question that high degrees of stress can affect the hormones that are needed for healthy and regular ovulation. Excessive stress can make you ovulate late, sporadically, or not at all. Conceiving during your ovulation window is an important part of being able to successfully become pregnant.

But, more than that. one of the most important variables that help to influence your baby's gender (or whether you have a boy or a girl) is your ability to determine exactly when ovulation takes place and then have intercourse accordingly. For example, if you want a boy baby, you're better off having sex after ovulation. If you want a girl, it's a bit more tricky because you need to anticipate ovulation and then have intercourse before this.

So, this can be tricky enough even if you have regular and predictable ovulation. But, if you have high stress levels and compromised ovulation, this process can become even harder. Yes, you can use a good ovulation predictor (like the saliva models) to help with this, but the process is easier if you have some sense of when you regularly ovulate.

Can Stress Affect Your Baby's Gender?: Now that I've covered how stress may affect your ovulation and therefore your fertility and your ability to become pregnant, I'll now discuss if it affects your baby's gender or sex. To put it as simply as I can, in my opinion, the three major things that influence whether you have a boy or a girl are timing, the mother's PH, and the sexual positions that are used.

I've already discussed how stress can affect your ovulation which can therefore affect your timing. But, what about the other two variables? Well, I suppose having a lot on your mind can affect how often you have sex and this could in turn contribute to your missing an optimal ovulation or conception day.

So, we've covered two of the the three variables. Now let's look at the third. The last question would be can stress affect your PH levels or whether you're acidic or alkaline? There's some debate about this. But there is some literature that suggests that stress makes you more likely to be acidic. And being acidic makes you more likely to conceive a girl (especially if you successfully address the other two variables.)

So yes, while there is some literature to suggest that stress might make you very slightly more likely to conceive a girl (because you could be more acidic,) I certainly would not suggest willingly adding turmoil to your life for this cause. There are other, safer ways to make yourself more acidic if you're wanting a girl like your diet and douching. And since stress can affect ovulation and fertility, it probably makes sense to avoid stress as much as you reasonably can when you are trying to become pregnant.
