This is the first in a series of articles on improving your website ranking for the all important search engines. I will cover the necessary elements needed to achieve rankings high on all the search engines.nnn Your site has been published now for months and you are wondering when you will start seeing visitors to your site. Well you’re not alone; millions of Internet entrepreneurs are wondering the same thing. Your website is looking good, all your T’s are crossed and your i’s are dotted, but you’re still aren’t getting visitors to your site. If your shingle or billboard is on a side street or back alley how many people are really going to see it?

It could be a number of reasons why your site isn’t ranked where it should be ranked. The list is long but my plan is to help you either fix your site or help you design a new site that will be ranked high enough so it will be seen on the internet. It’s pretty much a given that if your site doesn’t rank in the top 30 you’re not going to be seen. Sure you can buy space in the print media, hand out flyers, advertise in the yellow pages, and people will see your website listed there and might actually make their way to your site. This all costs tons of money.

First let’s list the possible reasons why your site isn’t doing well. I’ll start with the simplest but the least likely to be your major problem.

First is the site design and contentn
A lot of websites just don’t have enough content on their home page. The home pages are void of the pertinent information that is important for search engines to determine how to rate their site. Search engines can’t see as people do, they can’t read flash elements, photos, gifs, or frames. We all know that you want your visitors to start at your home (index) page. If you want to have your site seen on the search results of Google you must have good relevant content that the robots can analyze. Your keywords have to be selected carefully and be populated amongst your content and be grammatically correct.. Your site must have the all the necessary code elements to make it easy for the search engines to index and rank your site high in the results. That leads me to the second possibility.

Second is search engine optimization.

What is search engine optimization you ask? Search engine optimization or SEO is the art of creating a web site that is search engine friendly. That means a site with the proper elements built into the page, relevant content, good use of keywords, and the right tags or code. Google ranks websites on at least two major factors. The first is the easiest to understand and achieve and that’s website content as it relates to the search term. The second is importance and the hardest to achieve. Google judges importance mainly by which sites link to you and their relevance to your site, plus the race for the top positions are also a matter of quantity. If your site is on par with your competitor’s site in content and relevance then in order to appear ahead those in the search results you had better be more important than they are, according to Google’s link algorithm. They must be natural links (not bought or traded) and must be one way links. nnn In the next few months I’ll be publishing a series of articles on how to design, market, and promote your website. Be sure to check back here to find out how to fix or build a website that will be seen.
