The medical college is funded and run mutually by the state and central government of India. The medical college was honored to be the First Post Graduate Medical Institute in Eastern India at the time of inception. The medical college was permitted by the Medical Council of India (MCI) on August 1, 2004. The medical college celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2007.

Undergraduate Medical Admission Process
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates seeking MBBS Admission in one of the best medical colleges in India i.e. IPGMER Kolkata must have
• Completed 17 years of age as on 31st December of the year of MBBS admission.
• Passed HSC examination (Academic Stream of 10+2 curriculum) of any State/CBSE/ISC or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, with the group of subjects like - English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Botany & Zoology) / Biotechnology and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology at the qualifying Entrance Exam. In respect of the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (NCL), the minimum marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the qualifying examination shall be 40% marks for Unreserved and General-EWS Candidates. In respect of PwD candidates, the minimum marks in the qualifying examination in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany & Zoology)/Biotechnology taken together shall be 45% instead.

MBBS Entrance Exam
NEET UG is a common MBBS entrance exam conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to the MBBS course in medical colleges in India.
