Internet has led a revolution in information technology and has made it easy to access different type of information and services. At the same time, it has also given rise to an addiction disorder called Internet addiction disorder (IAD). This addiction refers too overuse of Internet. Ease of many activities through Internet has led a lot people to use Internet. It slowly becomes habit and ultimately turns into addiction. Internet addiction disorders may be of various types such as online gaming addiction, online pornography addiction, social networking addiction or addiction of blogging and other such addictions.

Internet addictions are Cyber sex Addiction, Cyber relationship addiction, compulsive use of Internet, addiction to overload of information, online or offline computer game addiction, Internet pornography and online gambling.
Studies have revealed that Internet addiction is not a problem only in U.S. but is growing epidemically in various countries such as Italy, Pakistan, Iran, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Countries like China, Korea, and Taiwan are also not far behind. It is difficult to measure how widespread the Internet addiction problem is. University’s School of Medicine conducted a national study related to this addiction and found out that nearly one in eight Americans suffer from one or other problematic use of Internet.
Patients with Internet addiction are preoccupied with the Internet. They need excessive use of Internet for satisfaction. They get restless, moody, depressed, or irritable on being stopped to use Internet. They spend a lot of time online and lie to family and friend about there online uses. They neglect important relationships, try to get rid of their problems by indulging online and it is of utmost importance foe them. They loose control on their behavior, neglect sleep, feel guilty, ashamed or depressed, loose track of time while being online. Neglect other works and like to be isolated. They get a high sense of pleasure while using Internet.
It also affects the patient physically. They may have weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck ache, dry eyes or strained vision.
Many people use the Internet to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. They find solace in socializing on Internet or indulging in other online activities. They get a temporary relief from their problems and mood enhancement. It becomes habit and slowly turns into an addiction. People who are lonely or unhappy teenagers are more likely to be addicted to Internet for solace. Patients with other addictions are more prone to this addiction.
Internet addicts also need help of a medical expert to get rid of this addiction. They need self-control, counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy for their treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy gives step-by-step ways to stop compulsive Internet use. Counseling also helps to find out the root cause of addiction and its treatment. Patients need support of family, friends and other near and dear ones to get rid of this addiction. They can also try to curb out their need of Internet use by indulging in other activities.
