To land a job this today’s market, here are some interview techniques that are essential to your success. Here are seven ways to set yourself apart from your competition.

– Know what job you are interviewing for and know exactly what the employer is looking for in a candidate. While this might sound simplistic, it is critical. There are actually candidates who are eliminated from the applicant pool because they have done a poor job of keeping track of exactly what job they’re applying for and have no idea what the employer is looking for in terms of qualifications. You’ll have greater success (and peace of mind) if you get organized. Keep a detailed list of your application activities, a copy of the resume/cover letter you sent, along with a description of the jobs for which you apply.

– Become well informed about the company. Find out as much as you can about their history, what they do, and any new initiatives they might have coming up. If you arm yourself with pertinent questions and engage in a topical discussion about the company, the hiring manager will determine just how interested you really are in the position. Obviously, this is one of the best interview techniques to use.

– Show how you are a match for the job. Going through the job description line by line, and finding ways to demonstrate that you are a match for that requirement helps sell you more effectively to your interviewer.

– Dress the part. A wise man once said that you should always try to dress for the job that you want, not the job that you have. Making sure that your appearance is neat and proper helps show your interviewer that you care about getting the job. Easy to do and one of the most important interview techniques that you can use.

– Practice, practice, practice. Think of the interview questions you dread answering – those are the ones you want to work on first. Do an internet search for interview questions you might be asked and practice your responses. Be ready with intelligent replies.

– Try to relax. Keep in mind that, just as much as you want the job, the hiring manager saw something in your resume that generated interest. This is your time to shine and to show them that they were wise to request an interview with you.

– Follow-up. Your parents always made you write thank you notes for your presents and it was good practice for your job hunt. Send a handwritten thank you note expressing your interest in the position. This is one last opportunity for you to close, and it’s probably something your competition is not doing.
