Death takes place when all the accounts of karma of a person for that particular life are finished
We all witness the occurrence of birth and death. Spiritually speaking, whatever karmic account one has bound for the current life comes to an end, and therefore death happens.

Let’s read on to know the science of karma in some more detail.
The mind, speech and body that a person is born with are like three fully-charged batteries. The charge in here is that of karma. These batteries begin to discharge right from when the Soul enters the womb and continue to discharge throughout life. When the batteries get fully discharged, life comes to an end, and it is called death. Thus, a person’s karmic accounts are exhausted through these three batteries. However, while these batteries are discharging, new batteries for the coming life are being charged simultaneously. In this manner, the discharge (effects of karma bound in previous life) and the charge (new causes of karma for next life) continue to occur throughout one’s life.

In the final hour of death, the next life is decided, based on the spiritual evolutionary status, which is determined by the result of the final analysis of his balance sheet of karmas. The law of Nature is exact in what it sends forward. As per the balance sheet, one can be born into four life forms. Those with super-human qualities go to heaven. Those who are decent and humane will come back in a human form. Anything that one has acquired by devious use of intellect will take him to the animal kingdom. And those who do not hesitate to even destroy people’s homes for their selfish gains will go to hell. However, it is not the external actions that charge karmas.

The inner intentions or meditation is what charges karma and brings forth fruits in the next life
Moment to moment, throughout the entire life, depending on what kind of one’s internal meditation is, accordingly the subatomic particles of matter are pulled inwards into the body from the outside, they take on the form of anger-pride-deceit-greed. These particles keep accumulating as karma (new causes for next life) throughout the life. This is how the charging of karma for the next life takes place and it builds up into a causal body. Upon death, the Soul, the subtle body and the causal body go together to the mother’s womb. The subtle body is the electrical body that carries out natural bodily functions such as digestion, circulation, etc.

The charging of karma (causes) takes place because of the person’s ignorance of his real Self
As long as one’s wrong belief of, ‘I am Chandulal (please insert your name here)’ prevails, attachment and hatred continue to occur, giving rise to new causes. Once this wrong belief is replaced with the right belief of ‘I am a Pure Soul’; attachment and abhorrence, and consequently new causes cease to occur.

How can we attain the right belief of ‘I am a Pure Soul’?
For example, a gold ring contains a mixture of copper and gold. Now, how do we attain pure gold from the ring? By going to a goldsmith, isn’t it? It’s because only a goldsmith can separate the gold and copper as he has knowledge of both the metals' qualities.

Similarly, if we want to attain the Pure Soul, we can do so by going to a Gnani Purush, the Enlightened One, who can separate the real Self (Soul) and the worldly self (what we believe to be our self, other than the Soul) as he has the knowledge of the qualities of both. With the help of Gnani, we can attain Self-realization. Thereafter, one becomes a non-doer and consequently does not bind new karma.

In God’s vision, no one ever dies
The Soul is eternal, it never dies. Just like the cover on the pillow keeps changing, but the pillow remains the same; in the same way this covering of ours i.e. the body is discarded, but we are a Pure Soul, so we remain and go into the next life. The cycle of life and death continues until the balance of karma comes to nil i.e. no karma whatsoever is present on the Soul. The death then is called Nirvan or the final death.

But as long as one has not become the Soul (Self-realized), one will experience fear of death. If our focus and belief was not one with the body, then death cannot touch us.

Therefore, our topmost priority in this human life should be to go to Gnani who can give us the vision of God, by gracing us with Self-Realization. Then, the charging of new karma stops. Later, in one or two births, as the discharge karma also finishes, there shall be an absolute absence of karma on the Soul. We shall then attain Nirvan, the final death, after which we are not required to take any new birth.
