Is it Time to Replace the Paper Towel Dispenser?

If you run a restaurant, a store, any kind of business where you're providing a public restroom to your customers, keeping your paper towels stocked up is important, and keeping your dispenser in good shape is equally so.

So when the time comes to replace your paper towel dispenser, the last thing you want to do is put it off just to save a few bucks. You're going to need to replace it eventually, so you might as well get it over with.

Think about it, when you go into a public restroom at a restaurant, you wash your hands, and you reach for a paper towel only to find that it shreds in two when you pull at it, it kind of puts you in a sour mood. You have to wipe your hands on your shirt, or just shake them dry, or waste a bunch of napkins wiping your hands. You're probably less likely to leave a decent tip (although we know it wasn't the server's fault, the fact remains that unhappy diners leave smaller tips), and when it comes time to get lunch tomorrow, you're thinking back to the broken paper towel dispenser and wondering if the other burger place across town keeps their restroom in check.

This is perhaps a little dramatic. In the long run, the business lost due to a broken towel dispenser is probably marginal, but the fact that you're losing any business at all should be proof enough that keeping your bathroom in working order should be a top priority.

To test your paper towel dispenser, just go into your restroom and wash your hands. When you grab at one of those Georgia Pacific paper towels, does it come out in one piece? Did you have to claw at it and yank on it? Were you worried the whole thing was going to fall off the wall if you pulled too hard?

Again, a well made dispenser will last for quite awhile, but we all have to contend with vandals, abusive customers who have no idea how to treat restroom equipment, and of course, the regular wear and tear that all of our equipment must endure if it's going to be put to use in a business setting. It's important that, should your paper towel dispenser be in need of repair or replacement, you repair or replace it immediately.

Really, it all comes down to treating your customer right. If they see that your restroom is falling apart, then that's going to reflect on their overall impression of your establishment. Even if that's the one area where they might register a complaint, a crummy looking bathroom can really color an opinion. No matter how good the food is, how clean the restroom, if you walk into the restroom and see the paper towel dispenser hanging off the wall by a thread, you're wondering if it's safe to eat here ever again.

Do your customers, and yourself, a favor, and make sure that all of your restroom equipment is clean, well maintained, up to date, and most importantly, that it works. Even the cosmetics of a paper towel dispenser will affect your customer's opinion, but nothing says "We don't care what you think!" like a paper towel dispenser that refuses to properly dispense paper towels.
