Is Your Marriage Doomed to Fail? Help Your Marriage Flourish With These 5 Simple Steps
Written by Lucy Morgan-Rowe
Say "I Love You" in Actions and Wordsr
If you want your spouse to believe that you love them, then you have to show it even more than you say it. Do something unexpected and nice for them. It doesn't have to be anything complicated. It can be something as simple as running an errand for them or helping around the house more than you usually do. Actions do speak louder than words.
Surprise Giftsr
While gifts are expected on birthdays, some holidays and other gift-giving occasions, the ones that are often most cherished are the ones that are unexpected. It doesn't have to be expensive because, especially in this case, it truly is the thought that counts. You might see a book from a favorite author that you know your spouse hasn't read, or if they have a collection of things or a hobby and you happen to see something, pick it up for them. It can be something silly, sentimental or something that simply says, "When I saw this I wanted you to have because I knew you'd love it." Like giving water to a wilting plant, your spouse will perk right up.
Show You Carer
If you're flipping through the TV dials and notice that there's a show about a sport or subject on that your husband might enjoy, let him know. If you see your wife's favorite movie airing or an actor she might really like scheduled to be on talk show, give her a head's up. It's simple acts of thoughtfulness like these that show you care and gives nourishment to your relationship that will provide help for your drooping marriage.
Let Go of Anger
Yes, chances are your spouse is going to do something stupid that's going to upset you and make you angry. Like you, they're only human. But unless you're in an all-out war in your relationship and are trying to hurt each other, it's often more likely that what they did was unintentional, unavoidable, or just plain thoughtless. If they are sincerely sorry and it really doesn't affect the overall health of your marriage, let it go. You'll feel better in the long run and, because you're not constantly harping on them about their blunder or holding a grudge, you will likely see that your partner will try to make it up to you and be more aware in the future about what your "hot" buttons are and will avoid them. Not letting go of resentments is never helpful for a marriage to survive or thrive.
Rekindle the Romancer
Stop behaving as if your spouse was just another obligation or worse...that you don't even think of your spouse except in ways that make them feel more like property or a servant.
When you were newlyweds, you made a point to create all the special romantic moments that made you feel like you were living in a fairy tale. While reality eventually had to set in and you realized that a mature marriage has to deal with many of life's blows, it doesn't mean that you can't feel the way you did when love was first in bloom.
Feed the kids early and have a special candlelit dinner for just the two of you for no reason at all except that you want to. Pay her a sincere compliment. Touch each other in affectionate and unexpected ways like you did when you first got together. Whisper something funny or sweet. Laugh more. Read together. Look at your wedding photos or pictures of you when you were dating to remember what life was like when your relationship was new and then try to recreate occasional moments like that again.
If you're truly interested in providing help for your marriage, you must nourish it and care for it, and soon it will flower again like your blossoms do in springtime.
