Janitors, also known as office cleaning personnel, are the ones that manage the cleaning process in public buildings and private businesses. Some janitors may have their own company and have a few employees. They may also work as an employee of a company who cleans offices and usually works with one or two other janitors. It depends on how many offices there are to clean. Working for a janitorial service may mean working alone and traveling to several small offices during your shift. Generally, to work for a janitorial service you do not need to have a high level of education. It is not unusual for someone who works as a supervisor to have some college education.

The general responsibilities of someone who works for a janitorial service involves routine cleaning, which can include:

  • Removing trash from the waste cans
  • Sweeping floors
  • Vacuuming floors
  • Mopping floors, such as in the break room and restrooms
  • Restocking and cleaning the restrooms, including cleaning the sinks, toilets, and mirrors

When a janitor works for a government owned building or school, they are generally called a custodian. In addition to the regular janitorial services, they may also handle other responsibilities like after hours making sure that all the doors are locked, any electric alarms are set, wiping down desks and blackboards, and more. Some custodians work during the school days while others come in to work after school has let out for the day.

When you work for a janitorial service that cleans offices or other public buildings, you will normally work evenings after the building has closed. Janitors, or custodians, who work in a hospital may work any shift and can include weekends. When you work for a hospital you will be responsible for making the beds, making sure that the bed and room is clean and sanitized after a patient leaves. You will be responsible for cleaning up any messes the patient may make. You will clean restrooms, the patient’s room, hallways, and more. There is a lot of work that is done when you are working in a hospital, especially if you are working day shift.
