People suffering from sinus problems due to allergies, colds or due to other causes often have symptoms of sinus infection such as headache and stuffy nose. These are usually signs of a sinus related infection. Symptoms are usually mild to severe headaches in the sinus are right behind the eyes, cheek bones and forehead, in addition to stuffy nose. There are various over-the-counter sinus type infection treatments available or patient can consult a physician to know more about their condition and the ways on how it can be treated and prevented. Symptoms of sinus infection may result in swelling due to bacteria within the sinus cavities. These cavities are connected to the nasal openings and allow both air and mucus to flow freely. When the sinus is blocked due to swelling and infection, the air within the sinuses causes pressure and thus results to sinus headaches. With the given situation, air is unable to get into the sinus which is another reason for sinus pain. There are treatments such as sinus sprays which are available over-the-counter. This spray can provide relief and treatment by killing bacteria and other microorganisms which are causing symptoms of sinus infection. Sinus related infections are classified based on the length and if it is infectious or not. Acute sinus type infections often last less than a month, sub-acute which lasts for 1 to 3 months, and chronic sinus infection which goes for over than 3 months. Infectious sinusitis is often due to viruses and bacteria, while non-infectious are due to allergens or other environmental irritants such as smoke or drugs. Sub-acute and chronic sinusitis may also be due to insufficient or lack of treatment of an acute sinusitis. Symptoms of sinus infection for acute sinusitis often include facial tende ess, headache and fever. Coughing, sore throat, and a greenish or yellowish, cloudy discharge is few of the most common signs of sinus related infection. Additional symptoms sinus infection is swollen areas around the eyes, reddened nasal passages, facial areas which became sensitive to touch and pus-like drainage. This will all be examined by the doctor upon checkup. Patient's history is essential as well and may also be required to undergo other examinations including CT scan or MRI to reveal the actual infection. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms of sinus infection , it is best to check with your physician as soon as possible. This is to know the severity of the condition and to apply necessary treatment as soon as possible.
