Anxiety is a normal response to stressful situations and it is usually not disturbing but it can be very helpful for someone to be prepared for the nerve wracking situation. For instance, a student's anxiety over a forthcoming exam will make him or her study well to pass the exam. However, if a person cannot control unnecessary worries to the point that it interferes with his or her daily activities, anxiety becomes a disorder. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Exaggerated fearful thoughts or worries about everyday happenings even there is little or nothing to worry about is known as generalized anxiety disorder or GAD. People with GAD have bothering thoughts that tragedies are about to happen even there are no logical basis about it and most of the time, they cannot control their anxiety. This disorder must be treated because it could get worse over time if not treated. Common signs and symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder:
  • chronic exaggerated worry about everyday problems
  • irritability
  • restlessness
  • trouble falling or staying asleep
  • muscle tension
  • trembling
  • profuse sweating
  • headaches
If you are suffering from the disturbing signs and symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder for at leat 6 months, it is best to consult your doctor. Anxiety or panic disorder is the most common mental disorder and it is a very treatable disease. A mental health professional can give the proper diagnosis and necessary treatment for your condition. Your physician may recommend anti-anxiety drugs, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation and stress management techniques. If you have tried almost everything and you are still suffering from anxiety attacks, do not lose hope. There are treatments that are effective to some people and not to others.
