Kukui Nut Oil - Homemade Skin Care
Written by Susan Katchur
Kukui nut oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the aleurites moluccana or kukui tree, the official state tree of Hawaii. The kukui tree came to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers. This natural oil was used to anoint babies from weather elements, skin irritations, wounds or burns. It was also used, for many hours a day, to massage members of royalty.
Today, kukui nut oil is found in a variety of homemade skin care products including: homemade soap, homemade lotion, creams, balms, scrubs or used in massage oils. It has a semi-clear color with a very light, sweet, nutty aroma. Its aroma is so light; some claim it to be odorless. You can add just a few drops of this natural oil to your bath water for a luxurious, silky, soft and soothing soak. It is a, highly, versatile carrier oil which can be used with essential oils, for a superb moisturizing agent. It can, also, be used as an oil treatment for dry hair or scalp conditions.
What is so special about kukui oil? This natural oil is a wonderful moisturizer. Its thin texture quickly penetrates the deepest layers of the skin, while creating a protective shield that locks in moisture, without blocking pores. It leaves no greasy feeling, but instead leaves a silky smooth texture to skin. It contains large amounts of essential fatty acids, (lionoleic and linoleic acids), and vitamins A, C and E which provides antioxidants benefits that protect the skin. There are no known documented allergies, but people with nut allergies should either avoid it or use it with caution.
