Week by week development of pregnancy condition is a desired thing. It reduces risk and ensures that nothing is left to chance. It also ensures maximum comfort to the mother and the baby inside by providing all those medicinal and other supports as per the week to week changes happening.
Although the first and last trimester of pregnancy is of utmost importance for care and monitoring, the middle duration is not to be overlooked. By the 17th week, important developments in baby growth occur. This is the time when the first trimester is almost over making way for the second. Thus, the initial developmental stage is about to be over and now is the time when the initial growth is to be sustained properly with right food and supplements.
The baby size is about 5 inches widthwise and 9 inches from head to toe, if stretched. The bone development initiates at this 17 weeks pregnancy with the initial soft cartilage gradually hardening. So calcium deficiency becomes an important factor for monitoring. The brown fat starts depositing around the skeletal structure. This fat actually entraps the heat and hence helps in keeping the baby warm. The sweat glands start to form while the skin remains very thin and semitransparent even now. The eyes start developing although the eyelid remains closed. The mother may feel a little off balanced sometimes owing to an imperceptible change of the centre of gravity due to the baby’s weight increasing up to about 5 ounces.
Going into the 18 weeks pregnancy, the mother will start feeling a lot of movement inside. The baby is about 6 inches in width by now and there is still a lot of space inside the uterus. The baby may just start rolling and twisting inside as the growth of the skeleton, muscles and tissues continue. The eye development involves a more sensitive retina while the ears and their mechanism of informing the brain also starts commencing now.
Due to the internal movements, the mother may just start feeling a bit dizzy and off balance sometimes. But extreme care should be taken to avoid a fall and prevent external damage to the baby and the internal growing organs, otherwise havoc may happen. That’s why it is important that the parents are aware of the pregnancy stages of every week. At no stage can neglect and carelessness be there, otherwise results may be adverse. It is of course desired that a deep monitoring is there, and symptoms of the mother, both physical and emotional, be cautiously observed. Going into further stages of pregnancy, medical attention should always be sought whenever there is any little doubt or suspicion about any symptom.
