Law Determining NRI Status: Types of NRI Citizens
Written by Ajay Sawhney
The best and often the safest way to make money is by investing in a business. For the NRI, this might be difficult if not impossible without the help of the local firms that deal with business investments and taxation. They take care of the tax returns along with the investments so the NRI need not have no worry about anything.
Filing the income tax retu
You must file the income tax in India if your income from Indian companies and sources exceeds 2.5 lakh INR. You may use the services of the Non-resident Indian Taxation service provider to file your taxes if you are an NRI. To know if you are an NRI or a resident Indian, follow the guideline laid down by the Indian tax authorities.
An NRI remains defined by the Foreign Exchange Management Act 1999 (FEMA) as the Indian citizen carrying on business outside India in line with the duties of his or her employment. They might also be a Foreign National of Indian origin. They consider a person as an NRI if the person has stayed in India for less than 182 days in the previous year.
We have three main types of NRIs. The first is the class of people who stay abroad for employment. Or else, they have a business or purpose that makes them stay abroad for an indefinite period. The second category consists of Indian citizens who stay abroad because they remain employed by a foreign government agency (for example, the United Nations Organization or the World Bank).
Government employees who are NRIs
The third category of NRIs are the government employees who serve a deputation abroad for short periods, such as an Indian Diplomatic mission. To determine the residential status of the person, we use two acts. One is the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1973 (FERA). The second is income Tax Act, 1961 (ITA).
The taxation service provider in Delhi is useful for the NRI. Apart from the Non-Residents Taxation in India, the service provider offers many other services too. These include investment in local businesses and mutual funds. Being in touch with the local markets helps them understand which one is the best for investing.
