Learn How To Sell a Diamond
Written by Mike Menser
It is true that most people that purchase diamonds are going to be purchasing them forever. There are going to be times, however, when it becomes necessary for you to sell the diamond and perhaps even the ring that was included. When this is the case, you're going to find that there is quite a bit of conflicting information that is available and that can often lead you in the wrong direction. Here are some tips that can help to clear the air about how to effectively sell a diamond and what you can do to make the most out of the sale.
One of the problems that may come with finding a diamond buyer is the fact that they realize that most people are not willing to purchase something that is used. That is why the price of a used diamond is so much lower than one that is new, even if it has never been worn. It is also true that you must be able to trust the person is buying the product from you as they are going to be responsible for the bulk of the work that is required. It's a good idea for you to shop around a little bit to find somebody that is trustworthy and that will be willing to be honest with you throughout the process.
It is also important for you to avoid the temptation to go to the nearest pawnshop and try to get a good price on the diamond. More than likely, you will get the lowest price that is available and although they may need to keep it for a certain length of time, it will quickly be gone once that time has expired. You're going to get a very low percentage for the actual value of the diamond when it is sold through such a resource.
If you are trying to sell an engagement ring or any other type of diamond, it's also important for you to consider the value of the entire piece of jewelry. Going to an estate jeweler is one way for you to establish that price but you should also consider the value of the rest of the jewelry and not just the gemstone. If it is gold, you may be able to get a hefty price if there is plenty of gold that is in the jewelry. Make sure that you check on that possibility and then sell the stone separately to make as much money as possible.
Finally, you do have the option of using an online broker that will buy the diamond from you. Just make sure that they are willing to give you an estimate as to how much you are going to receive from the purchase. It is a better idea for you to have somebody that purchases the diamond outright then to try to sell it on consignment. There are a lot of issues that could arise when you put a diamond on consignment, including the possibility of not getting any money and getting a different diamond when it is returned.
