Several years ago I had a family member become ill with an unusual condition that was difficult to diagnose. The doctors did not have clear answers so we went to a holistic practitioner. It was discovered that she had high levels of mercury in her blood stream and eventually we learned that she was also sensitive to certain other dental materials. Through the process of helping this family member I became a holistic dentist.

Holistic dentistry means that the dentist is considering the “whole” person and their health when he provides dental care. There is a lot of confusion and contradictory information about this subject, especially on the internet. The truth is that there are many things that we just don’t know. There is a definite lack of quality research to depend on. I know this because I belong to an organization called IAOMT that evaluates research from around the world searching for answers.

You don’t need to be sick to benefit from holistic care. Many of my holistic patients are simply health oriented and want to take good care of themselves. . For those who do want this type of care, I evaluate their needs on several levels. These levels include

1. Treating infections that might affect the immune system – including gum disease
2. Removing exposed silver mercury fillings using IAOMT guidelines
3. Evaluation of material sensitivities and use of non- reactive materials
4. Removing silver mercury that is under other treatment

For our holistic oriented patients we use the IAOMT guidelines for mercury removal, which include special high-volume vacuum equipment, use of a rubber dam, copious water spray, and oxygen delivery so that the patient does not inhale mercury vapors. If you are conce
ed about mercury exposure it is important that these guidelines be followed.

Not everyone is interested in doing things the holistic way. It’s an option. In my office, we simply give our patients information and then let them choose what they want for themselves.
