Since time immemorial there have been debates amongst the intellectuals on whether we are born intelligent or whether Intelligence is an entity that has been manufactured down the ages. The western philosopher John Lock put forth a theory which stated that man was born with some scattered innate ideas and which gradually develop the capability to give those ideas proper shape. This epistemological theory came to be known as Tabula-Rasa.

Generally the proponents of the tabula rasa thesis favor the ‘nurture side of the nature ‘versus nurture debate’, especially when it comes to aspects of an individual’s personality, behavior and intelligence. Though there are various critics to the theory given by Lock, most of the great thinkers agree to the statement that we are not born empty minded. A child's first words, the grasping of a spoon and a baby’s turning their head in recognition of their mother's voice; are all examples of a young child's developmental "steps" forward.

Parents are anxious for their children’s intelligence to develop quickly and well. The good news is that parents have the unique opportunity of raising the intelligence level of their children during the first few years of life - and have a wonderful time doing it. That means your efforts plus your baby’s own interest in what is happening, will have a lot to do with your child’s intelligence. Motivation plays a key role in the way a baby learns. The first two years of life are important ones for the baby’s growing brain.

When babies are exposed to sights, sounds, textures to feel, smells, and tastes, more connections are made inside the brain. A number of factors influence the development of the baby’s brain. These important factors include genetics, food and nutrition, responsiveness of parents, daily experiences, physical activity and love. In the development of a child’s intelligence, the school plays a major role. There are many more logical ways to improve child’s intelligence as the school does.

1. Create an atmosphere for learning and make sure that your child is interested. Let the child lead the activity; stop when the child is bored, tired, or frustrated,

2. Repeat the activities that your child wants to do again. It may be boring for you but pleasant for the kids,

3. Always foster your child and tell them that committing mistakes is a normal and it is a part of learning,

4. Encourage active play. Running, jumping, and other active play is better than sitting in front of the TV or watching adults play,

5. Keep different types of toys and books on a place where your child can easily reach. Introduce new toys one at time because too many toys can over excite them,

6. Assist your child in using the five senses-hearing, seeing, touching, tasting, and smelling-to explore objects. Also see they focus on one sense at a time,

Work as a team with your child’s teacher or therapists. Share ideas and solutions. Together, you can help your child live up to full potential, at school, at home-and in life.
