You may have seen advertisements for a very popular brand of body wrap that you can perform at home that claims to flush out toxins and remove unwanted fat and inches using “all natural” ingredients. While most of these ingredients ARE natural, there are several that aren’t.

The main ingredient that should be of concern is BHT. BHT is used as a preservative in these wraps so the ingredients applied to the wrap retain their color. BHT is primarily used to prevent fats in foods from becoming rancid – but it is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, electrical transformer oil, and embalming fluid. Not exactly something you should be absorbing into your body.

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this substance gives warning against the use of BHT. It states the following:
• BHT should NOT be allowed to enter the environment
• BHT is combustible
• Ingestion causes abdominal pain, confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting
• BHT may have effects on the liver
• BHT is harmful to aquatic organisms

Aside from all of the reasons above to not use products containing this chemical, research has also shown BHT has been linked to cancer, developmental toxicity, allergies, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption and biochemical or cellular level changes. How appealing do these body wraps look now?

Another ingredient that concerns me with these wraps is Magnesium Aluminum Silicate. This is a naturally occurring thickener. According to the Cosmetics Database, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate is approved by the CIR Expert Panel, but only in LIMITED concentrations. The CIR’s concern with this particular ingredient comes from the fact that aluminum is a known neurotoxin.

So, now that you know the truth behind these so called “all natural” body wraps, you may be wondering if you can still obtain the same benefits of a wrap without exposing yourself to potentially dangerous chemicals. You most definitely can by using a proven recipe. This recipe is a home version of the popular all natural wraps performed in elite spas across the globe.
