Low Alcohol, Great Tasting Wine - Is it Possible?

Low alcoholic versions in the drinks industry are not a new thing and the lager and beer sector has long had lower alcoholic versions of lager and beer. Stella Artois are renowned in the UK for having a slightly stronger taste than most other beers which is why they decided to offer a lighter version to please the masses in the UK market. Kaliber is a zero per cent alcoholic drink that has been on the market for many years and Becks and Erdinger, two very popular brands in the sector have produced their own non-alcoholic versions.

With the success of such low alcohol drinks in the beer sector, the wine sector is looking to follow suit but the question is; are they going to be able to maintain the same taste whilst reducing the level of alcohol that is in the wine. It is also important for these companies to consider the impact that introducing such a wine will have on the brand, will it cheapen the brand and could it have an impact on the other wines that fall under the same brand. It is a decision that many companies in the wine industry have to make and many have already put plans in to produce low alcohol wines.

The main reason for the surge in low alcoholic drinks is the importance placed on corporate social responsibility by the government to all drinks companies. In addition to this, binge drinking is something that the industry has to take responsibility for and as an increasing number of these wines enter the market, this should see the effect drinking has on the economy reduce considerably.

What this means is though is that these wine producing companies must now try and find the happy medium between reducing the levels of alcohol and keeping that crisp, rich taste. Some companies may decide to run a few tasting sessions with customers to gauge their reaction before they spend millions on producing a whole range of low alcohol wines whereas some may see it as their duty to release such a product. There is no doubt that there is going to be more to releasing a version of wine than usual but it looks like the wine companies are going to be left with very little choice so it is going to be interesting to see how each of them tackle this in the very near future.
