Written by Mirjan Stojanovic
Gynecomastia which is caused when there is abnormal enlargement of a man’s breast can take place at any age of men and occurs either due to low quantity of testosterone, the hormone which brings masculine characters or increased quantity of estrogen, the hormone which gives rise to feminine characters.
Male babies, teenagers as well as old men face equal possibility to suffer from this deformity. In common language it is also termed as moobs. In new born male babies, gynecomastia arises due to the estrogen that transmitted to them by their moms. Mostly the deformity doesn’t continue for more than age of 6 months however infrequently it can sustain.
Gynacomastia is much prevalent in boys attaining puberty. It can stay for 2 years however most often it goes in the 1st year itself. It is sometimes seen that by the usage of tea tree oil or lavender which are used in baby things such as shampoo, soap, oils, etc.
gynacomastia takes place in boys of preteen age. Though the reason for this is not definitely obvious, one supposition regarding it is body assumes these two things namely lavender and tea tree oil as the estrogen, the female hormone and starts enlarging the tissue mass of breasts. It is also possible that a tumor which secretes estrogen also brings in gynecomastia.
In teenager boys hormonal imbalance is the commonest underlying cause of gynecomastia. sixty percent of the patients are between early and middle pubertal age. 70 percent of the affected boys are free from it in one year whereas 90% within two years.
In older men cause of gynecomastia can be totally unassociated with hormonal problem such as liver cirrhosis, hyperactive thyroid or carcinogenic lung or liver. Occasionally it can be due to imbalance in hormonal levels as well, taken place by cancer of any gland. Alcoholic beverages as well as drugs like marijuana and heroin and medicinal druglikemethamphetamine can also be the causative factors of gynecomastia.
Some specific medicinal drug too may cause gynecomastia. They are antidepressants, chemotherapy medications, epilepsy medicines, steroids, antiandrogens, heart medicines and ulcer medicines.
One more cause is increased weight or obesity. But actually this is not exactly gynecomastia, but it is termed as false or pseudo gynecomastia. Due to the excess fat, the fat tissue gathers near breasts same way as it does in other parts of the body and it seems like increased breasts.
Gynecomastia can be very upsetting because of the scorn it receives. At times the affected person starts hating himself owing to the increased breasts. One outward remedy for this is to don male bra which conceals the raised breast size. And also wearing loose-fitting attires can make the increased breasts less prominent. Thus the affected person can at least partake in social life.
The cure of gynecomastia differs according to its underlying cause. Most of the affected persons experience their condition going in the course of time. In particular in babies and teenagers, it is most possible to disappear. But sometimes when it sustains it necessitates to be taken care of. At times the affected person may be suffering from breast cancer.
There is a high probability for this if any of the close female relations is or was affected. So diagnosis is utterly necessary. If gynecomastia arises because of any medicine, suspending the medication is the remedy.
If it arises because of changes in hormonal levels, hormonal treatment needs to be taken. If the sufferer is going through psuedogynecomastia, losing excessive weight by correct diet and abundant physical exercise solves the disorder.
