What is the History of Latex Gloves?
For about 120 years, latex gloves have been manufactured and the manufacturing process has been largely taking place in Malaysia since it is the primary source of rubber used in the production of latex.
The first documented use of the latex gloves goes back to the time when the gloves had not been yet invented. In 1883, a surgeon at John Hopkins Hospital wanted to find the appropriate way of protecting the hands of his nurses. He went ahead and asked the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to manufacture rubber gloves that would withstand some of the chemicals used frequently. Goodyear created the gloves and it was successful.
In the following year, John Hopkins began using latex gloves. As other hospitals noticed the frequent use of these gloves at the facility, they also began using them. During the early years of the production process, the users would find it difficult to place the gloves on their hands. For resolving the issue, ground moss and talcum powder were mixed and used as a lubricant for the gloves. After a few years, it was discovered that the use of ground moss was poisonous. Talc powder was used as a lubricant for about 40 years. Its harmful effects were also discovered and since then the use of cornstarch as a lubricant has gone rampant.
The first latex gloves that were disposable was manufactured in Australia by Ansell in 1964. The manufacturing process of the gloves was modeled after the manufacturing process of the latex gloves. Since then, the manufacturing process of the latex gloves has been popular and the manufacturing and production rate has remained steady up to today.
What is Used to Make Latex Gloves?rnLatex is found naturally in 10% of all the flowering plants and it is common in the rubber trees. It is usually a milky liquid obtained from the rubber tree once its cover has been shaved and the tree oozes the white liquid.
The substance is affected in white but it can happen that it turns out to be yellow, orange or even red. The latex obtained from the natural milky liquid is used to manufacture rubber. This rubber is used in the manufacturing process of a number of commercial goods such as latex gloves.
The difference between the latex found in the rubber and the latex found in the natural liquid is the composition. The production process for the gloves begins when the liquid latex is combined with the other chemicals. A hand-shaped tool is inserted with different size and shape into the heated latex and then allowed to cool. After cooling, it will dry and harden. After the latex gloves become hardened and dry, it will go through a rinsing process where any remaining chemical or dirt will be gotten rid to ensure it is in its purest form. After the rinsing process, the gloves will be packed ready for the shipping process.
