Massachusetts Attractions: Newbury Street
Written by Connie Limon
Newbury Street is a 2 mile long stretch that was once part of the Boston Harbor. By 1882 almost all the buildings were built in European design with wide boulevards, grid patterns and parkways. The 2 mile long stretch became a prestigious and exclusive residential neighborhood and was the most desirable place to live in Boston. The houses were huge with all the latest amenities of indoor plumbing and coal-burning furnaces.
The 2 mile long stretch is now a retail and tourist destination. It is known today as the “Rodeo Drive of the East,” and serves as Boston’s representative of fashion and style right along with the most exclusive districts of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. There is an independent mix of shops, high-end fashion and dining establishments. All the first-class salons and hair style shops are located on Newbury Street. Any other street in Boston is second-classn.
With its broad sidewalks, storefronts that extend into the sidewalk and street vendors, Newbury Street shows an individuality and uniqueness that is lacking in many of the other commercial districts. If you visit Boston, Newbury Street is certainly worth your time to stroll down the sidewalks and just see what all you can find. There is always a wide mix of people traveling the sidewalks on Newbury Street.
