Do you dream of going to college to get a degree and get a great job? Are you currently in college but struggling? I have been in your shoes. Let me tell you how to succeed at college.

Before you enroll at a university, check out the payment options and financial aid programs it provides. Only take out a student loan if you cannot fully pay your tuition with a scholarship or grant. If you have a job, try to use part of your wages to pay for tuition.

Once you enroll, spend time becoming acclimated. Take a tour of the campus. Once you have your class schedule established, look for the classrooms you will take classes at. Talk with the campus guides to learn everything that is available to you, what you should do in certain situations and where everything is. Read the brochures and other materials that are provided.

Seek good advice. Let the advisors who represent your major steer you in the right direction regarding the classes you should take. Sign up to work with student mentors. Try to connect with the school alumni.

Carefully choose the amount of classes you will take each semester. If you live with your parents and do not work full time or wish to take summer classes, I recommend you
take five classes a semester. My father started charging me 200 hundred dollars a month in my sixth year of being in college because I was only taking three classes a semester and I declined to take summer classes.

Be picky with your work schedule. If you want to work but do not need to work full time, look for a part-time job that will let you work around your class schedule and get plenty of time to study.

Keep up with your study materials. Before you leave home to attend classes, check your book bag to make sure you have everything you need. Whenever you leave a classroom, job or anywhere else you take study materials, check your area to make sure you are not leaving your stuff behind.

It is important to attend all your classes, especially because professors usually cover most of the material on the tests. To avoid missing learning time and interrupting the class, arrive at your classes on time and stay until the class adjou

It is crucial to take good notes because you will not remember much of what you hear. Some professors talk quickly and you will not have much time to talk with professors about all the information you forgot; therefore, you must use shorthand and take notes quickly. Abbreviate the words you write down.

If you are not a good note taker, record your class lectures with a tape recorder or study with someone who takes good notes. If you cannot work out a time to study with a classmate who takes good notes, copy his or her notes with a copy machine on campus after the class is over, if you have the opportunity.

If you cannot understand something that is said in class, raise your hand to ask for clarity. If the professor does not have time to fully answer your question then, see him or her after class. Take advantage of your professors’ office hours to get help with material in your notes or text books.

Keep all papers, tests and handouts throughout the semester. Attend some of your class workshops, especially if they are required. Use the writing lab, math lab, computer labs and other campus labs. Speak with the lab consultants when you need help. If you take a foreign language class, get a good foreign language dictionary.

Start working on term papers as soon as possible. Show your professor your rough draft to learn how you can improve your work. Use the campus library to find a good book to do research for your term papers. Use the information you gain from your class to include a good bibliography with your paper. Let qualified friends and family members help you with term papers and class projects.

Do your part to make your experiences of working in groups for class assignments successful. Cooperate in regard to helping the group reach a consensus. If your group agrees to meet away from the classroom at a specified time, show up on time. Put forth as much of a contribution as you can. Pick up some of the slack for members who cannot do enough on their own.

Study in a good environment. The place where you study should be quiet and free of distractions. The lighting should be adequate.

Study efficiently. Hold your books up while studying. Skim your material and focus more on studying the chapter summaries and first two or three sentences of each paragraph. Do the questions and exercises in your books. Form your own questions regarding what you remember and understand. Use plenty of repetition and study your notes at different angles.

Pace your study time. Take a five-minute break after studying for about thirty minutes. If you are not good at cramming, study almost everyday and set a particular amount of time to spend studying each subject. Devote more time to studying the harder subjects. If you are good at cramming, it is best to mainly spend the last few days before a test studying. To retain more of what you study, study at night instead of during the day.
Make the most of your major. To get the experience employers demand, look for a good internship pertaining to your major before you are set to graduate.
