MegaPath Announces Its New Nationwide Ethernet Network

This week, MegaPath Inc. – one of the biggest privately held end-to-end facilities based provider with 16 years of experience responding to the unique needs of businesses of all sizes – announced its plans to increase its Ethernet over copper network to over 680 central offices (COs) by mid 2012. The expansion would create the largest nationwide Ethernet networkand make MegaPath Inc. the leading nationwide Ethernet over copper services provider.

MegaPath's Ethernet deployment originated last year when Covad, who merged with the carrier, launched in the LA market. Currently, MegaPath provides Ethernet over copper service from 200 COs, and plans to provide services to 200 additional COs by year's end. After that, MegaPath will provide services to the residual 280 by next summer.

For the build-out, MegaPath is employing the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 multi-service platform. According to Pasha Mohammed, the director of product management for access services for MegaPath, the multi-service platform will enable the carrier to add Ethernet over fiber in 2012.

The bonding capabilities of ADTRAN's VDSL2 and EFM will allow MegaPath to deliver up to 100Mb per second symmetric services, while concurrently providing download speeds of over 400Mb per second.

ADTRAN's carrier Ethernet and optical solutions marketing manager, Kurt Raaflaub, noted that the rise in bandwidth is a result of higher modulation united with using up to eight pairs of copper. The director of product management for ADTRAN, Kevin Morgan, further explained that the added development is that it is MEF-acquiescent and thus, conserves customer precedence's for real time traffic.

Morgan also asserts that MegaPath’s new speeds are 4 to 8 times greater than DSL and 6 times higher than most Ethernet over copper solutions. MegaPath's SVP Chief Technology Officer, Amair Hussain, stated "ADTRAN is a market leader and is enabling us to push the technology envelope, while maintaining the reliability and Quality of Service standards that are paramount to our customers."

Morgan went on to say that while the majority business Ethernet solutions have historically been symmetrical, now traffic patterns are turning out to be increasingly asymmetrical, with one of the causes being the employment of intrinsically asymmetrical cloud delivery models.
