Mind is the part in our internal functioning mechanism where thoughts arise. This mind, on a daily basis, produces thousands of endless, repetitive thoughts. And not knowing how to deal with these thoughts, it creates such a turbulence within us, that we feel sick and tired of this mind, but can’t find ways and means to come out of its clutch.

Lord Krishna has said in the Gita that mind is the very cause for man’s bondage and mind is the cause for man’s freedom too.

So what is the mystery of mind…
How can it be dealt with…?
Let’s read on…

Mind is in its own nature, it is we who do not understand the science of the mind and therefore try to push it away. Once we know its nature, role and keys to deal with it, we shall be better equipped to work with it!

Let’s understand the nature of mind first…
The nature of mind is constantly wavering. We find it difficult when the mind wavers too much. Even when it starts doing anything, it is in a hurry to complete it and jump onto the next thing. The reason for people’s current state is this; the very restless and contradictory nature of the mind. One thought will arise saying, ‘I will do this’, and within a moment, we notice the mind has changed. It says, ‘I don’t want to do it anymore’.

Then how is mind helpful?

Mind has two roles:

1.Like that of a radar: The role of mind is to inform us about things just like a radar: This is good, this is fearful, this is like this, this is like that. It does so with the help of thoughts. It signals what it sees and these signals are not to frighten us, but to caution us instead; so that we can take a remedial action on time. Not to get scared of them…

2.Like that of a boat: The mind is a like a boat; it can also make you wander aimlessly in the worldly life and it can take you to moksha if you meet a Gnani Purush. As he gives your boat a compass. Your mind becomes steady and peaceful in His presence, so then imagine how wonderful and peaceful His mind must be!

Then how does the Gnani deal with His mind?
Can we also use those tricks to deal with our mind?
The answer is yes…Let’s discuss Gnani’s methods that we can incorporate too.

1.Attain Self Realization (Gnan)

After you attend a Self Realization Ceremony, it will become easier to keep your mind separate. You realize that, “I am Pure Soul and my nature is only to see and know.” With this, your belief, ‘I am indeed the one who is having this thought’ also drops.
For the following solutions as well, after you take Gnan it is easier, however you may still try to apply the following

2.Experiment of Conversation

Mind expresses what it feels. Thereafter, it is up to us to decide whether what it is saying is useful to us. If we say yes, we make use of it, otherwise we can simply respond to it in a kind tone, ‘Ok, I will be careful henceforth.’ Listening to our reply, the mind feels respected and it moves on to the next matter or issue. Practicing this with the mind helps tremendously well. Even when it shows scary thoughts, for e.g., ‘What if this happens…what if that happens’, one must understand that these are just thoughts; whatever is to happen shall happen as per destiny and not according to what the mind thinks. So we just have to tell the mind, ‘Ok, I have noted it’, and the mind will start talking about some other things, that are nice and soothing.

3.Keep the mind occupied

Considering the restless nature of mind, it cannot sit idle doing nothing, and therefore is always up to something. It is important to keep it occupied with some work. Mind is a good doer of a job; we must only know how to get our work done!

4.Decide what you want

Once you decide, ‘This is the road I want to travel’. You may listen to what your mind says as long as it is not deviating from your determined path. And when it goes astray, turn it around saying, ‘Hey, don’t go that side.’ Mind will turn in whichever direction you guide it to, just learn the art to guide it correctly.

5.Give what it likes

If the mind is upset or stuck at some point like work, learn how to appease it. One way is-you can win the mind over by giving it some candies, chocolates, ice-cream, or anything that it likes. This will make it feel happy, and then see how it works for you all day long, exactly the way you want it to! The mind quickly gets over its whims when you satisfy it in this manner, otherwise, it can give you a hard time and also beat you down.

6.Make a Deal

In certain situations, you can also make a deal with it, ‘I know you do not like to do this, but if you do this much for me, I will let you do as per your wish.’ Your mind will not mind then, doing what it otherwise didn’t like. But make sure whatever you deal with is in agreement with your goal.

7.Form a Reverse Opinion

If you still find your mind insisting or craving for something that is against your principle or goal, know that it is a result of the opinion you have formed in the past. Eg. Say you ate chocolate pastry in the past and liked its taste. The mind then forms an opinion, ‘One must eat chocolate pastry, it is very tasty’. The intensity with which the opinion was formed determines the intensity of your craving; it is directly proportional. But now if it is your goal to lose weight you may try the following:
Form a reverse opinion, by repeating, ‘No, chocolate pastry is not worth eating’ a number of times, and gradually you shall see the craving in the mind no more exists. Consequently, the mind will start following you.

Some incorrect ways of dealing with mind…

1.Worrying over thoughts and forcing the mind
It is pointless to worry over thoughts. If you keep badgering the mind or forcibly demand it to ‘turn this way…turn that way’, it will revolt, and not turn as instructed. Nothing will be gained by confronting the mind, that’s how the nature of the mind is!

2.Forbidding good things
People try to control their mind by renouncing one thing after another and depriving the mind of things it enjoys. Taking this route, going ahead, you will notice that your mind has become edgy and it gets agitated over petty little things for no reason. This is because of the irritation that got built in due to unnecessary renunciation that you forced it into.

3.Dancing to its tunes all the time
We often pamper it unnecessarily. You have to restrain it when it comes to matters of benefit or harm with reference to your goal, but not with force. The mind is like a coiled spring; if we suppress it or pound on it, it will bounce back. Instead, converse with it and say, ‘Look this is my principle, what you are saying is not acceptable to me.’ Reason it out in this manner in order to convince the mind, and you will soon see that your mind is in your control, happily and effectively.

4.Keep ignorance
Do you want to know the biggest science of all? It is the mind that thinks and you, out of ignorance, say, “I am thinking”. This is where the problem begins… And it perpetuates when you go on to say, “Why do I get such thoughts?” and get upset.

All in all, People either pamper their mind or oppose it. No, you have to actually ‘reverse’ it! Pull it back as illustrated above. The mind will become tyrannical if you pamper it; it will react if you oppose it; instead reverse it and it will be under your control.
