Nail fungal infection is easily one of the most painful and embarrassing conditions that affect a significant number of individuals. This type of fungal infection develops when the infecting microorganism penetrates and affects the inner portion of our fingernail or toenail. An infected nail becomes brittle and harder and one can observe the distinct discoloration and noxious smell of the affected fingernail or toenail. There are several home remedies that are proven to be effective in controlling nail fungal infection. In fact, you can use them as practical alternative to conventional treatment options that are available in the market. If you are seriously considering other treatment alternatives in getting rid of this fungal infection then you should include in your short list of options the following home remedies.
  1. Apply a small amount of iodine on the infected nail as well as the surrounding area in order to safely remove the dead cells. After a few minutes, thoroughly wash the affected nail. Once done, wrap the infected nail using a cotton dressing cloth that is soaked with iodine.
  2. Soak a ball of cotton in lime juice and wrap it around infected fingernail or toenail. Lime juice is known for its potent antiseptic property and is effective in inhibiting the growth of fungus that causes this type of infection. This home remedy for nail fungus is also effective in sucking the secretions from the infected fingernail or toenail.
  3. You can also treat toenail fungus with onion slices. You just rub them on the infected nail. The antifungal components of onion penetrate deeply into the infected portion of the toenail or fingernail. The use of onions is also an effective way of preventing the growth of toenail fungus.
  4. Turmeric paste is also a potent solution for nail fungus. Before you apply the paste, you have to cut the affected fingernail or toenail to ensure that the solution is properly absorbed.
  5. Tea Tree oil is a popular home remedy for this fungal infection affecting the fingernail and toenail. Aside from being an ideal solution to nail fungus, Tea Tree oil is also used for the nourishment of our fingernails and toenails.
  6. Other home remedies that you might consider in treating nail fungus include Listerine and chlorine bleach. To obtain optimum results, you must use these home remedies on a regular basis. Normally, significant results can be obtained after 30 days of regular application.
