Arjuna is a tall tree, which is very valuable in Ayurvedic medicine. There has been since ancient times, when it was known as nadisarja and was used as a heart tonic. The great Indian proponent of ancient medicine, Vagabhatta, was the first to use the bark of the arjuna for heart ailments.
Arjun is indigenous to India, but also found in Myanmar and Sri Lanka. It is found particularly near wetlands. It can reach a height of 20 to 27 meters. Its binomial name is Terminalia arjuna.
All parts of the arjuna are important in Ayurvedic medicine. Its bark is the most valuable, giving a milky sap when cut. The bark contains an alkaloid valuable, which is named as the arjunine. Other chemicals are arjunetin arjuna, lactone, sugars and various essential oils.
Nelumbium speciosum is a large aquatic plant with thin, elongated, branched and creeping rhizomes. Nodes, roots and leaves emerge. The leaves are peltate, 60-90 cm in diameter, petiole very long, smooth or with small spines, much higher off the water. The flowers are solitary, large, fragrant, white or pink with a yellow bull sponchy central location in which carpels are sunk, the fruits are ovoid, nuts, achenes. Plant pacifies vitiated pitta, urinary system disorders and heart hyperdipsia, diarrhea and vomiting, burning sensation in the body, nervous exhaustion, skin diseases, urinary retention and general weakness.
