Natural Protected Areas that You should Visit While Enjoying Madeira Holidays

Laurissilva Forest is the most popular natural protected area in Madeira. Another unique fact that keeps people visiting this lush area is that it occupies 20% of the entire Madeira. Did you know this is the world’s largest concentration of Laurissilva forest? Moreover, it has been added into the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. It spans over 15000 hectares. The forest also features incredible biological diversity. While strolling around the region, you would come across over 60 vascular plant species. Several wild life lovers plan last minute holidays to Madeira especially to take a closer look at various species of pigeon, bats and lizards. The natural protected is also famous for its well balanced ecological system.
Another worth mentioning natural protected area in the island is Madeira’s Natural Park. It covers two-third of the island. Large number of tourists prefer to find Madeira accommodations near this park so that you feel the freshness of serene natural surroundings. Besides tranquility, you can also feel the thrill of recreational activities. The natural park consists of Laurissilva Forest, the Selvagens Islands' natural reserves and the Desertas. Total area of the natural park is more than 27000 hectares. Portugal has only one marine reserve known as Gararjau Marine Reserve. It is situated in Madeira’s Natural Park.
Desertas Island’s Natural Reserve cannot be missed, if you really want to add tinge of natural freshness to your cheap holidays to Madeira . This reserve has become a rage among those who love to capture sea birds in their cameras. While walking through the reserve, you would come across variety of sea birds. Most common ones are shearwater, buzzard, storm-petrel and bulwer’s petrel. Besides bird watching, you can also enjoy scuba diving in the reserve. You just need to dive into the warm turquoise waters to admire incredible underwater beauty.
