Need Surgery? What You Need to Know About Going Under the Knife
Written by Hannah Whittenly
If you plan to undergo surgery to treat an illness or injury or for cosmetic purposes, you should know what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Knowing what to expect can help put your mind at ease and will leave you better prepared. Here are a few things that you should be aware of when it comes to going under the knife.
Food Restrictions Are Usually Necessary
Most of the time, a surgeon will instruct you not to eat or drink anything eight to 12 hours before your surgery. Even taking small sips of water or nibbles of food will likely be forbidden. It’s important that you follow these instructions to avoid any nausea or breathing problems during surgery. In the last few days leading up to surgery, choose foods that are high in protein to help you speed up the recovery time. After your procedure, your surgeon will let you know when it’s safe to eat and drink again.
Arrange a Ride Home Beforehand
You likely won’t be able to drive home safely if you undergo an outpatient procedure. A trusted friend or family member should be there to take you home. Make sure that this person’s vehicle is spacious enough for you to comfortably fit and relax while being taken home. The vehicle should also be stocked with certain medical supplies in case you experience any complications on the way. Even if you go in to see an oral surgeon, such as one from Oral Surgery Associates Inc, for dental implants or another type of oral surgery, the anesthesia that’s used could impair your judgment and make it unsafe for you to drive home yourself.
Bring the Right Items with You
Regardless of how long you’ll need to stay in the hospital or clinic, there are certain essential items that you should have with you. According to Verywell, these things include your I.D. Card, insurance card and list of medications that you currently take. If you’re required to stay for more than a day, bring along some comfortable clothes and shoes to wear on the day that you’re discharged. Bringing books, games or other things to keep yourself entertained after your surgery is also advisable. All jewelry, cash and credit cards should be left at home.
Refrain from Exercising Too Soon
If you’re tempted to get back to normal life quickly after surgery, you should wait to hit the gym or do any other exercise until your doctor tells you that it’s safe. Working out too soon after surgery can prolong your recovery time. You might also experience other complications like reinjuring the surgical area or tearing any sutures. Some light exercises may be okay soon after surgery, but check with your doctor first. When you do finally return to your workout routine, be sure to start slowly and gradually progress to your regular pace.
Preparing yourself for surgery can help make the process less complicated and easier for you to manage. By knowing what to expect, you’ll have a better sense of control over the situation.
