What do I mean when I say "No salesperson is an Island?"

Here's exactly what this means.

A salesperson is never just someone selling something.
Rather, they are always a representative of a company and a part of the bigger picture. Every prospect that they meet and every client that they deal with will formulate an opinion of them that will undoubtedly become their opinion of the company. It's just the way humans are wired. We make judgements – often without even realizing that we are doing it.

Therefore, any salesperson that you have on your team must be representing effectively, or they must not be allowed to be on your "team".

And, while you want a salesperson who is competitive and driven and a go-getter, you do not want one who is a "shark", so to speak, being disrespectful in any way throughout the sales process. To gain respect, they must give respect – AT ALL TIMES.

** AN INVESTMENT IN A GOOD SALESPERSON IS AN INVESTMENT IN THE SUCCESS OF THE BUSINESS.
Many people out there claim to be good salespeople, but the truth is that most are not. Those salespeople who find themselves at the top do what's necessary to stay current, to build long-lasting relationships with peers and clients, and continue to challenge themselves to get leads. To be a top salesperson, you can never be lazy expecting the sales to fall in your lap. A salesperson has big shoes to fill – and must continuously prove themselves and their capabilities to their company by closing deals. It doesn't matter what you did last year in sales. What matters is "What can you do for me now?"

Salespeople need to continuously challenge their methods of generating and nurturing leads, to keep their finger on the pulse of what is going on in their industry. You can never let your guard down when you are in sales. There are always others waiting for the chance to take an opportunity right out from under you.

Keep an eye on what the competition is doing – what they consider their "edge", and work your own angle around how you and your company are different.

Being a salesperson is not always easy. The key is to never give up when you hear the phrase "sales slump" or that there are no sales to be had. The sales are always there….you just have to push yourself harder to find them. Do so with diligence, respect and determination. Stay true to who you are, while at the same time staying true to your company "brand". Human nature is not forgiving when it comes to first impressions. In the world of sales, the salesperson gets one chance to make their mark, so make sure it's a positive one.
