Despite what some people might say, the medications that are usually indicated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have their necessary merits; these drugs can help in aiding your child or your teen overcome his or her condition. However, when considering the continuous and excessive side effects that the drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can bring, some parents have chosen to find for other ways and means to effectively manage their child or teen’s ADHD.rnEnter the use of alternative medicine and other natural rntreatments. While using some of these techniques may be helpful for some, it has also been found that both traditional and alternative treatments can work effectively alongside each other. So, with that in mind, let us look at the several types of therapies that are not necessarily rooted in the use of prescription drugs. rnOne example of this is to have your child or teenager be involved in behavioural therapies. What are these? While it is recommended that a psychiatrist can be used to work with behavioural interventions for your loved one who is affected with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it can be just as simple as talking to your child or your teenager. You can help your loved one in choosing the kind of activity that he or she may enjoy doing, or even designating a task that is quite simple to perform, just so he or she can achieve or satisfy a sense of self-worth. Setting rules for the sufferer may be helpful, as can coming up with suitable schedules and routines for them. These “simple” things have been found out to curb instances of hyperactivity by helping the child or teen develop his or her level of concentration. If anything, it quite resembles a “positive reward” system that some clients using cognitive therapies are very familiar with.rnDiet has also been found to play a major part in decreasing the severity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It has been found out that there is a certain link between the appearance of allergic symptoms often coinciding with the rise of hyperactive and impulsive behaviour in a significant number of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder sufferers. Thus, certain food like dairy products and other stronger fare like chilli and bell pepper are to be avoided for a while as suggested by some experts. Also, some studies show that a consistent intake of foods rich in artificial colouring and chemical additives, processed foods, commercially manufactured products, sugars (chocolates and fizzy drinks are commonly stressed as the most important foods to be avoided) and even something as “safe” as eggs or flour can all exacerbate the signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Dietary supplements, like omega-3 fatty acid and zinc, are encouraged by experts to be added to the daily diet of your child or teen. rnYou may also know this, but some herbal therapies have also been found to be quite effective in regulating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Some of the more common examples are St. John’s Wort (which is already a notable antidepressant), melatonin, rooibos, valerian, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, and pine bark extract. These can be obtained over the counter, and are available at any drug store or natural food store in the country. rnThese are only some of the more effective types of alternative treatment, which have been found to boost your child or teen’s concentration, and also control the signs and symptoms of his or her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. If you have any more questions with regards to other alternative treatments, please find a specialist who can help you.
