Packaging â It Doesnât Have To Be Perfect.. But It Helps!
Written by Melvyn Board
In order to make your finished DVD or CD really stand out from the crowd you’re going to have to do something a little bit special with the packaging.
Not only that, but the print work on the disc itself will also go some way towards telling your potential viewer about the quality of what is actually on the disc.
It is easy to throw away a plain disc in a simple clear plastic folder. For a start it could be chucked out unintentionally if the person tidying their desk has no idea what is on it. Secondly, it is far more difficult to get rid of an item on which a lot of time and effort has obviously been spent to produce something that is akin to a quality-looking product. None of us wants to believe they are missing out on something!
So what kind of creative and imaginative packaging materials are available to potential clients today? Well, how about printed card wallets, a slipcase or even a digi-pack? All of these are available for larger orders of over 1000 units or more.
A MailPack is great for getting your marketing message across before the CD is even opened! This can be made into a card wallet holder or even hold CD-sized booklets and other promotional material.
CD duplication means ‘burning’ the data onto the disc by a heat-sensitive surface and in CD replication the glass master of the disc to be replicated is made. Stampers are used to indulge to replicate this glass master. The CDs are injected and shaped, then coated with metal and lacquer to make them tougher and more durable.
The Digi-pack is produced from thick card and, unlike the ordinary run-of-the-mill plastic DC case, is actually shatterproof. Again, it can hold a booklet and the number of panels can be increased to hold more CDs or DVDs. Many special edition film DVDs are produced using the digi-pack. Like the MailPack its finish can be in laminate or spot varnish, cardboard and with a matt or gloss finish.
And, just because the packaging is high-quality and dare-we-say glamorous, this does not mean it can’t be ‘green’ and eco-friendly. Clients can choose from 100 per cent recycled and biodegradable options with a paperfoam tray.
But the client doesn’t need to just stop there. Discs can also be produced to be eco-friendly where they are produced thinner, lighter and with 56 per cent fewer carbon emissions.
We’re in the process of upgrading our entire packaging division to produce top-of-the-range services unequalled by any of our rivals. Keep an eye open for our new packaging site to see exactly what we’re talking about!
