Painting Exterior Walls
Written by Shina Khan
Displaying your exterior walls to the best effect is generally easy enough. But to make sure the display is good, what you need to concentrate on is making sure that the wall under the wall paints is also quite sturdy. This means that you need to ensure that your exterior walls don’t to weaken due to moisture collecting. Moisture getting collected ensures that a host of problems follow, weakening your walls. Getting rid of ways that moisture can collect inevitably means that you need to take care of any cracks or damages on the walls. You also need to get rid of mildew or fungus that’s already grown. You might also want to replace the wooden beams that are rotting and if they’re still salvageable, you could let them dry out and then make sure that you give them a good coat of primer and then allow it to dry again. Priming before painting makes sure that the paint sticks to the walls.
Don’t go wondering about just the colour combinations you intend to use for your wall painting. There are more important considerations to look at first. Your exterior walls are greatly exposed to the elements. Wind, heat, water and dirt combined with all of them tend to leave a mark on your walls. They can cause paint to peel off, to grow mildew and give your walls an unattractive look. You need to use paints that can withstand the pressure of such elements for as long as possible. Generally you can find weatherproof paints of varying prices. Some come with a warranty of 2 years and others up to about 5 years. But look at whether they are oil or water based and depending on your preferences and needs choose one. If you’re not sure what you need then ask your local paint provider about them.
You need not worry that these will put a damper on your home painting, though. They come in a variety of colours to help you with your home decoration. So long as you give your walls the right preparation and the right coats of paint, your walls should hold the colour paints for a long time. You can mix and match these different colours to give your walls both an aesthetic look and protection. Remember though, that you allow each coating to dry well before you add another layer. Wet paint is a guaranteed way to damage both your wall and the paint job. Be patient and concise – and you’ll get great looking walls that last long.
