Without regular exercise all of our muscle groups can start to grow weak. This includes the muscles you can’t see that perform vital functions inside the body. Pelvic floor exercises are very important to help you maintain overall good health.
The pelvic floor group is an essential muscle structure in the body. These muscles stretch across the pelvis and help to control a number of natural functions including reproductive system, bladder and bowels. Over time your pelvic muscles can grow weak if there are not regularly exercised. This can lead to issues such as loss of sexual function and incontinence.
Who Needs to Do Pelvic Floor Exercises?
Everyone really needs to consider doing pelvic floor exercises. These muscles are deep in the body and are often missed by standard exercise routines. Pelvic floor exercises are particular important in the following situations:
-If you are pregnant then your pelvic floor region will be placed under a lot of pressure. To help you carry the baby healthily and prepare for the intensity of birth pelvic floor exercises are highly recommended.
-If you have noticed that when you sneeze or cough a little bit of urine can leak out then this is a clear sign your pelvic floor muscles are growing weak. This is a good time to start your pelvic floor exercises.
-If you have noticed a loss in sexual function then pelvic floor exercises could be beneficial. You should also see your doctor to check for other possible causes as well.
-If you are having trouble passing faeces then it is possible your pelvic floor is weakened. Pelvic floor exercises can be beneficial and again you should also consult your doctor for any other possible causes.
Getting Started
Pelvic floor exercises are very easy to do once you get the hang of them. Because this muscle group is deep in the body you can exercise them without anyone knowing. You could be sat at your desk practising your pelvic floor exercises without giving anything away to your colleagues. This makes is easy to fit in these exercises with your busy daily lifestyle.
-One of the main problems people have when starting pelvic floor exercises is that they can be focusing on the wrong muscles.
-You need to make sure you are not squeezing your buttock, thigh or stomach muscles by accident. It is important to keep the rest of your body still to help you focus just on your pelvic floor muscles.
-Imagine you are passing urine or faeces and you need to stop. The muscles you use to do this are all part of the pelvic floor. This will help you to identify the muscle group so you will be able to recognise when you are exercise them.
