It is safe to say that during the course of a lifetime, you will ask permission to do something. While growing up, you may have asked permission to go outside, have company or go out on a date. Doing something without asking your parents or guardian came with heavy consequences on most occasions. The practice of asking permission became natural as one enters adulthood.

A lot of times we as humans may struggle with how to fulfill our hearts desire to help people in need. Once upon a time, I was under the impression people appreciated money more than anything as a way of providing help. Parents are guilty of this when trying to make up for not spending quality time with their children.

Based upon personal experiences, giving your time and providing service is one of the greatest gifts to give a person or an organization. There are several ways to accomplish this goal. Here are a few suggestions: take care of your disabled or elderly neighbor's personal needs, volunteer at a homeless shelter or feed the hungry. Never let your ego get to the point where you think becoming elderly, homeless or hungry won't happen to you. Chances are one or all of these things will happen to you if you live long enough.

It's great to become a part of something but that doesn't guarantee you a spot in your family's hall of fame. What matters the most is that your time on earth is spent helping those around you become better people. This is the time when you discover balance in your life and realize that permission to serve is not needed.
