Most people interested in Peru, travel has heard of the Incas, the ancient culture that built the famous and notable Machu Picchu and was conquered by the Spanish around 1530. However, what you might not know is that Peru was once filled with many ancient cultures and parts of these long lost cultures are scattered throughout Peru. Here are several places and cultures that you should know about and be sure to visit during your tour of Peru.
Caral: Located near the coast a few hundred kilometers north of Lima in the Supe Valley, Caral is a city with a center of mass to the city that spans 626 acres. Not much is known about the society that built Caral, but this is the oldest known city in America, surpassing Mexico City at least a thousand years. The excavations only began in 1996 so there is still much to discover on this site. At this moment the site is not very impressive sight, just half a bunch of sand from the remains of temples, but knowing that in a city that developed at the same time as those of ancient Egypt is awesome.
Chavin de Huantar: This site is located in north central Peru, near Huaraz. This is the largest known culture have developed early in the Andes and Peru. But the great importance of Chavin is its heavy use of art. Their society is fundamentally based around religion, and believed in a deity feline. Visitors will find jaguar carvings throughout the site. This society was stronger from 1000 BC to 300 BC. One of the guests has the most amazing things when you visit the labyrinth of galleries under the temple. One has a five-meter high stone that is recorded as a deity called the Lanzón. You must add Chavine de Huantar during your Peru travel. So ask your travel agent to add Chavine de Huantar in your Peru travel package.
The Wari: From 600 to 1100 AD, the Wari became a mass society that extended from his headquarters in the Andes around Ayacucho to reach today Chiclayo and Cusco. Even though the Incas are often credited with the impressive agricultural terraces still visible today Peru, it was actually the Wari who developed this culture system. The Wari were a culture of conquest, which means they took over the smaller and less powerful cultures and integrated them. However, the structure of the building was not as good as the Incas, so no Wari ruins many are left intact, but you can visit the 1,500 acres outside the city of Ayacucho Wari. The Wari tours are offered by all international suppliers of Peru vacation package, but the adventure alone can easily configure and see the best of the Wari. You can also get information about the Wari from Latin America tour operators also.
