The Power Within
Written by Cathy Stillwell
We are yet to fully realise the impact one person’s actions have on others, especially when that one person is awakened and listening to the voice within.
I would like to share an experience with you that brings this to light
My daughter and I were in Melbourne with some friends at the later part of last year – having a great time, enjoying the sites and taking in the whole feel of cosmopolita

e. We were very much our own little unit, separate from the hustle and bustle - observers of city life. That is until an event occurred, which reinforced in me how connected and united the human race is. This we often forget or ignore as we go about our day to day activities, however every once and a while someone with the power to act within comes along and reignites the power that exists within all of us.
We were at Flinders Street Station on a very busy Saturday afternoon. The lights had just changed and we made ready to charge in a mad dash to the other side of the road. The lights had changed again by the time we were halfway across so we revved up the pace and sprinted to the safety of the pavement, rejoicing and congratulating each other on a job well done. We were still catching our breath when my daughter began to panic. I looked around to where she was staring and stopped in my tracks.
Frantically trying to cross the road, while dodging traffic that had decided to move forward, was a man in a wheelchair. This man was making his living by selling flowers and knick knacks from a makeshift stall he had set up on top of his wheelchair. I remembered at this moment that I had glanced his way earlier in the day though until this moment had not given him a second thought. Now he was trying frantically to move his wheelchair, still with the makeshift stall attached, across this very busy street – and nobody moved to help.
Traffic moved around him, horns blasted, people shouted at him to hurry up or move out of the way and my daughter sobbed hysterically, not understanding why no one was helping.
And then a young man stopped his car and got out. He moved towards the man, and as he did everybody else moved with him. Cars stopped, people got out and we all started to move back into the road to work with this one man who had the courage to change a potentially disastrous event. The man in the wheelchair was brought safely to the other side and was able to continue on his journey.
The rest of us left at the scene however, did not continue on our journey. We turned around and conversed with one another. We shared our stories. We connected. In that moment of courage, when one person moved into action we all connected with our power within and moved into action. The atmosphere was charged, the feeling electric and we acted on love.
The memory of this event will continue to reinforce in me that:
One person, with the courage to listen within and act on love can unite others and make miracles occur. We can all be that “one person”.

Cathy took the first steps on her journey of self awareness while working as a Leadership and Organisational Development Consultant in Australia. Her role as a change agent led Cathy to the discovery that organisational change is not something that can be led from the top as an external force. Change must come from within each individual for transformation to take place. This realisation, that we must first look within and change ourselves for change in others to be successful was the first step in Cathy’s beautiful journey towards awakening.
10 years on, Cathy is committed to sharing with others what she has learned on this journey and making a difference in the lives of organisations and individuals. Her company, “Steps for Life” now makes this happen.
Developed in 2006 by Cathy Stillwell, Steps for Life partners with organisations and individuals to identify the most appropriate path to awareness and sustainable and successful change.
The success of Steps for Life has been the acknowledgement that every organisation and individual is unique and so every journey to success is different and unique.
