Premature Ejaculation - Why You Should Avoid Self-Medication
Written by Damian Uadiale
Premature ejaculation affects about 30% of men all over the world. In some societies, having this kind of condition is frowned upon and is considered a sign of male weakness. However, in other societies, much has been done in research which establish premature ejaculation as a serious, but not totally incurable male sexual dysfunction.
It is quite common for men who suffer from premature ejaculation to do some self-medication, meaning to take medicines not prescribed by a legitimate medical practitioner. Most would not even think of consulting a doctor before buying pills or creams advertised in the media that promise instant relief from the condition.
Some men who suffer from premature ejaculation find it difficult to talk about their problem with their doctors, sometimes even with their partners. However, if the condition is not discussed with an authority, a man suffering from it may simply turn to the internet and do some self medication, which often present some risks. Many of these medications are considered "off label" due to the fact that they are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Desensitizing creams are the most common medications that are being promoted in the internet and other media outlets. These creams which usually contain topical anesthetics are supposed to delay ejaculation by making the penile area less sensitive to stimulation. The downside however is the side effect of numbness which many users have reported. The result is often an unsatisfactory and uncomfortable sexual experience with these desensitizing creams.
Many internet ads have also promoted the use of anti-depressants to cure premature ejaculation. These medications are considered SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) which are known to help in mood disorders like anxiety or depression. Anti-
depressants are also believed to help treat premature ejaculation, except that they can be habit forming and can also produce side effects such as frequent headaches and a decrease in libido, if used for an extended period of time.
If you are experiencing premature ejaculation, do not be afraid to admit to it and discuss the problem with your partner or better yet, with your doctor. Unsupervised self-medication can do harm to your health and the best way you can deal with your condition is to find more information about it. Your doctor can equip you with this knowledge or you may educate yourself on the matter through ebooks on the subject.
Premature ejaculation should not be taken lightly because although it is not a disease, it can interrupt your life and may lead to other problems in the future, such as depression. It may be prevalent, but it is not a hopeless condition.
