Once you quit something you awareness of it increases and your senses become heightened. That’s why when you quit smoking or are dieting; you crave it more because your senses are heightened. You smell a cigarette nearby; it seems like everywhere you look you see the foods that you are trying not to eat. Yes, you are being tested.
The important thing to note about being tested is that you don’t want to substitute one bad habit for another. Sometimes you can quit something cold turkey, no planning, just quit. This might work for some and many have been successful. But if you know that you are weak, you should have a plan. Do you want to quit smoking over an X amount of time? Do you want to lose an X amount of weight over a certain period of time? You have to plan accordingly to what you are going to do in those moments of weakness.
You have to be mentally prepared, there are many programs out to there to help you quit smoking and to help you with a diet and exercise plan. Ask yourself some of these important questions?
When do I smoke or eat the most? When I’m stressed, when I’m relaxing, or when you are out with your friends?
What is the best time for me to quit? In the morning, afternoon or evening?
If I go to a party, what foods are going to tempt me the most? You might want to eat fruits and vegetables before you go to the party so you don’t eat those tempting foods.
Part of quitting something is being aware of your weaknesses. No one knows you better than you. You can have something to deter you like spraying your favorite scent when you smell a cigarette, having gum handy when you get a craving, or simply having friends or the support of others to help you through.
No matter what the circumstance is, there will always be temptation. You have to be strong enough to overcome those temptations. Just know that you can overcome them. Let your determination shine through as you come to those crossroads.
People and circumstances might test our patients and your stress levels as well. Take a deep breath and know that you are stronger than the situation. Have faith in yourself and your abilities to overcome. Stand firm in who you are and let the calm inner you prevail. Sometimes words do not need to be spoken, in your silence your inner strength will shine. Sending you hugs and support along your path of being tested, just know that through knowing your own weakness that strength can and will prevail.
