Preparing children while shifting a House

Every family must have faced the prospect of moving at some point of time or the other. Moving can be disruptive for parents and the experience can be even more traumatic for kids, if they haven’t’ been explained about the process. No matter what the circumstances, the most important way to prepare kids to move is to talk about it Kids require time and special attention during the transition to make it less stressful for you. Job transfers, postings are the usual reasons for making a move. During times of transition, a parent's moods and attitudes can greatly affect kids, so try to maintain a positive attitude even if you're not happy. Infact inform them while you’re planning to shift so that they feel involved with the move.

Involving kids in the planning as much as possible makes them feel like participants in the house-hunting process. If you're moving across town, try to take your kids to visit the location, so that they can either see it being built or take a look at a readily available house. You could also arrange for a real estate agent can take pictures of the new house but be receptive to both positive and negative reactions. For distant moves, access the Internet so that children can learn about the country and the lifestyle of the people of the area you will be shifting to. Some of the points that you could consider as a parent could be:

1-Explain the process of a shift with your child.

2-Use a story to explain the move, or use toy cars, vans and trucks and load miniature furniture to act it out.

3-When you pack your toddler's toys in boxes, they might become possessive. Make sure to explain that you aren't throwing them away.

4-Shift in small moves, slowly over time, if your new house is also close by.

5-Avoid making other big changes during the move, like toilet training or advancing a toddler to a bed from a crib.

6-Arrange for your toddler or preschooler to stay with a babysitter on moving day.

Kids have a limited capacity to understand the changes involved in a shift and thereby require your guidance. The most important thought you must give prior to making a shift is to check whether it’s scheduled for the winter or the summer. Those are the two times that the children’s academic session doesn’t get affected. Prior to leaving the current school, it is important for you as a parent to gather as much of information about the new school to process the transfer.

This may include the most recent report card or transcript, birth certificate, and medical records. The problem to be addressed is slightly difficult when it comes to a teen. Be prepared for a teen in the house to actively rebel against a move. This is because in all probability, your teen has probably involved in a romantic relationship or has invested considerable energy in a particular social group. A move may mean that your teen will miss special friendships built over the years. It's particularly important to let teens know that you want to hear their concerns and that you respect them.
