Is goal setting really that important?
Just by simply setting goals, your brain is given the vital psychological ingredient it needs, to give you a fighting chance of achieving a successful outcome.
So what is this vital ingredient?
You'll probably work out the answer yourself with this simple example...
Suppose you have a 100k debt that has to be repaid within 12 months or else your home will be repossessed. On top of this, you're broke.
Repaying 100k in just 12 months is a tall order, especially when you're broke. So, what to do? Well firstly, understand that big problems are usually just a multitude of smaller, more manageable problems/tasks. With that in mind, let's make this 100k debt 'SEEM' smaller...
By simply dividing 100k by the loan term, i.e. 12 months, we get £8,333.33. I don't know about you, but £8,333.33 per month, for 12 months, seems much more achievable then 100k, in 12 months. But we can make it 'seem' even smaller...
Obviously, there are 52 weeks in a year, right? So, why don't we try dividing 100k by 52 weeks and see what we get. 100K divided by 52, equals £1,923.08. That sounds even better, now how about breaking that down even further? £1,923.08 divided by 7 days in the week, equals £274.73. Doesn't that seem even more achievable?...
My point is this...
Can you see how goal setting to make the problem 'seem' smaller, makes the problem 'seem' more doable? This is useful because without belief, your chances of a successful outcome are bleak, if not none existent!...
In a sense, goal setting, in this case, is similar to 'conning' your brain into believing the problem is smaller, when in fact, it's not...
THE VITAL INGREDIENT
When the path ahead isn't clear, you'll have a hard job trying to get your brain 'switched' on. As a result, the thought of emigrating will probably re-enter your head!
OK, all of that is great, but how do you find the required £274.73 per day?... I haven't got a clue, I'm just a self improvement strategist, you're on your own there.
From the above example, I hope you can see how setting goals can 'trick' the brain into believing the problem is easier, and much more attainable. Now I'll answer your question...
What question?...
Remember earlier, when you asked me what the vital psychological ingredient that your brain craves, in order to give you the best possible chance of success, is?...
