Lock all doors at all times. The windows should be open just enough to allow fresh air, not burglars, to enter.
Instruct house help not to entertain or allow strangers inside the house.
When somebody knocks, verify his identity before unlocking your door. Peepholes are very helpful for this purpose.
When it is a repairman, serviceman or electrical inspector, carefully verify his identity. When in doubt, call the office.
Do not admit strangers under any circumstances. If transactions are made, make them at the door. This prevents would-be robbers from observing the contents and plan of your house.
Cash and valuables are better deposited in banks.
Don't leave door keys in flower pots, under doormats or in the mailbox.
If possible, leave a light open at night to discourage the approach and entry of robbers.
Don't leave bicycles, your garden hose, and other valuable things scattered in the yard. These could invite thieves.
Use drapes or curtains in windows. They keep valuable things like your radio, TV set, and appliances out of the sight of robbers.
Record descriptions, makes, and serial numbers of your appliances so they can easily be identified if case they are stolen.
Before retiring at night, see to it that all doors and windows are properly secured.
When going on a vacation, request a trusted neighbor to look after your house and to call the police if anything unusual happens.
If robbers enter your home, try to quietly call the police. If you can, get out of the house and raise an alarm from a safe distance.
