Protective Measures for Handling Spa Covers
Written by Richard Morrisson
Proper cleaning and maintenance of spa covers goes a long way in retaining their durability and functionality. Make sure your spa cover is taken good care of.
Spa covers require regular cleaning with water and mild soap (not petroleum based cleaners). Standing water should never be allowed to collect over the cover, and removed immediately to prevent bowing of the cover. Only the handles should be used to remove the cover. Dragging, lifting and hanging, or yanking it would only damage the vinyl. Excess steam moisture should be drained every few days by allowing the cover to stand on one end. For heavy covers, a lifter should be used to make the task easier. Exposing the cover to hot objects damages the foam and vinyl, and hence should be avoided.
A floating cover can be used to prevent the foam board from absorbing water, and also from chemical condensation that damages the underside. It also improves the insulation of spa covers. The right balance of chemicals is essential, so that chemicals do not damage the cover or the spa itself. The excessive use of sanitizer weakens vinyl, and the same result applies to high levels of ozone. The pH of the water should be optimum, acidic or alkaline environments will deteriorate the condition of your spa and its cover. The cover should be completely removed before chemicals are added to protect it from splashes.
Pool toys should never be left on top of the cover. They make the foam board melt in sunlight to form puddles where water could collect. This weakens the board. Covering spa covers with tarps is a big mistake, since they cause the foam board to melt. Spa covers are not meant to be jumped, walked or played on. It shortens their life span. If puddles are noticed, the foam board from that side should be removed from the zipper, flipped, immediately replaced into the vinyl and zipped back up. Waiting could cause the vinyl to shrink, and you will not be able to replace the foam board. A spa cover cap with an elastic hem is a good way to protect your cover from the weather. If you happen to face any warranty issues whatsoever, they should be reported as promptly as possible.
