Put Away Your Guns!
Written by Greg Bethea Jr.
This is your final warning. PUT AWAY YOUR GUNS! It is time to let go of the gun slinger mentality. What am I talking about? I’m talking about all of the MLM Gun Slingers, drawing their prospecting guns on anyone breathing. I know that it is a common philosophy taught to network marketers all around the world, but it has to stop.
We have all heard of the different tactics involving piquing interest and prospecting. People have been using tactics like looking for a person to make eye contact for more than a couple seconds and using set up questions to maneuver a person into hearing about their opportunity. This is not to say that a person is completely wrong for using these tactics, but do you really think that is how people are getting rich in this industry?
How about the many people running after friends and family, harassing people in shopping malls and grocery stores, and spamming people on the internet? The real problem has less to with the activity, and has more to do with the approach; the mentality behind the actions. No matter what company it is, people are using the same approach.
Do you keep your business options open? I have a revolutionary opportunity; do you want to know more about it? Have you ever heard of…you should check it out. The list goes on and on. No matter the company, product/service, or industry, the mentality is the same.
Too many distributors are excitedly spraying innocent people down. If we be honest, some people are worse than others, doing more harm than good. Many distributors’ unprofessional actions have left many people disgruntled and skeptical of the MLM industry. They have been harassed, disrespected, and even insulted by our fellow distributors.
Behavior like this makes it hard for others to prospect, and creates a negative reputation for the industry. It also decreases your odds of succeeding. If you and thousands of other people are using the same approach and saying the say thing, where does that leave you? You are just another person; same book different cover.
This is why personal branding and marketing knowledge is necessary. Contrary to popular belief, a MLM business is still a business. Although it has been watered down by lack of professionalism and deception, there is still a need for specialized business skills.
The key is knowing when and who to target. I will give you a hint. It is not everyone you see and it defiantly isn’t your friends and family. Your answer is in understanding marketing and finding your niche.
