In a survey made by the Ministry of Family welfare, nuclear families seem to be on the rise in India while the joint family system gradually seems to be disappearing. With both parents working to fulfill their child’s needs, few parents have time to spend with their child. As a result the child is left at a pre-school, neighbor or crèche depending on the age group of the child. The walls of the house have fallen weak. Children as an outcome of this have now become weak in their character, not able to endure small failures in life.

They often get discouraged and even go to the extent of committing suicide if they fail their exams. Newspapers are full of content on how an X class student committed suicide because he had failed in the Board exam, or that a girl committed suicide because she felt she had let her parents down. These are chronic examples of children from whom their parents expected a lot or on the contrary didn’t have any time to spend with them. It is a known fact and in-fact even psychologists recommend that the more the time a parent spends with children, the stronger the moral foundation of the child.

This is by far one of the most compelling reasons for parents to spend time with their children.. A child feels comfortable enough to confide in a parent issues that might be troubling him or her, when a parent spend time and attends closely to the development of the child. The communication between the parent and the child is effective when they both have time for each other and are available when most needed. Time is a major element in building human relationship family bonds and shows where the child needs a parent’s attention.

It is also a moment when a parent discovers certain attributes in their children which they did not know of earlier.’ How was school today?’ or a pat on the back for getting an A or winning a trophy, builds affection and the children know there is someone to ask, question and run to incase there is trouble. There is much said about the importance of spending time with your children; however, no one ever discusses the potential of creating a debilitating dependency in your child by spending too much time with them
