Causes

Bad breath can be caused by many things. Whether it be spicy foods, smoking, or the consumption of coffee and tea, bad breath has a way of creeping up on everyone at some point in their lives. It is also thought that bad breath emanates from quantities of yeast in your intestinal tract. This yeast usually comes from baked foods and cheese. Tooth decay, stress, dehydration and infections of the ear, nose, and throat are also contributors of bad breath. Of all the causes of bad breath the most common culprit is the buildup of bacteria in your mouth, usually in the form of plaque. The latter can be attributed to a lack of flossing and brushing. Eating foods such as garlic and onions can also negatively impact a person’s breath.

What can I do about bad breath?

Oral Hygiene

Make an effort to brush your teeth after every meal. It can be helpful to carry around with you a travel sized toothbrush and tube of toothpaste. Brush your gums, teeth and tongue for at least two minutes; the most common mistake people make is to brush their teeth too hastily. Be careful when brushing your gums to avoid hurting them. It is also preferable to get a soft toothbrush to avoid gum damage. Flossing on a daily basis will also keep down the buildup of tartar and food particles that get stuck between your teeth.

Diet

Increase your fruit intake. Also make an effort to minimize the consumption of foods high in sugar, vinegar and alcohol. Reduce the level of Garlic and onions that you consume. It’s not just the foods you eat that impacts the quality of your breath but the quantity as well. Not eating can lead to a lack of saliva in the mouth. Saliva is crucial to flushing out oral odor causing bacteria. Keep your mouth well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids and maintaining a well balanced diet.

Supplements

Certain dietary supplements have also been shown to help fight bad breath. Taking Vitamin A and Vitamin C can help maintain teeth and gum health. Vitamin C has the added bonus of providing support for the immune system. Betaine HCL is created naturally in the stomach helps break down dead tissues and food that’s why it’s often recommended.
